Default ESTA approvals

Is it normal now to not get an answer to an online applications straightaway, and for it to take up to 72 hours?

Who knows. My son had an approved ESTA from December 2015, and purchased a ticket to come visit, then realized his passport expired while he would be here. New passport, new ESTA and approval delayed.

I went through the process with my 80+ yr old Gran about 7 months ago and hers was delayed by an hour or so. Mine went through immediately.

Strange ol' system.

It took best part of 2 days but approval finally came through. Nothing changed from the 2015 application apparently.
