Thats the beauty of language...it is rich and diverse.

My Dad was Russian, and he didn't speak a word of English when he got to the UK,he taught himself by reading newspapers, books and mostly the Oxford English Dictionary,he always said English was the most difficult langauge to learn because so many words sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings....he spoke fluent Polish,French and enough German to get by,although because of the 2nd WW he refused to speak any German.....Sophia
p.s. and, yes, 'erbs' drives me nuts as well!!!

That's damned typical. Most of the ham-shanks don't even understand how to pronounce their own language.

The "Sinjon" pronounciation is only for "Christian" names, not for surnames. Surnames of St. John are pronounced "Saint John".

What about our old MP, Norman Sinjon-Stevas, the archetypal Tory pederast?

In some ways, a St John-Stevas quotation appropriate to the thread:

"How amazing that the language of a few thousand savages living on a fog-encrusted island in the North Sea should become the language of the world."
