If I recall he took the name Attaturk (Father of the Turks) as previously they didn't have surnames and he wanted to modernise Turkey, he also banned the wearing of the fez as he deemed it a symbol of how Turks were viewed as stupid and backward.

It was a hell of a queue in the kebab house :D
