English Pubs in the USA
Morning all
Anyone care to comment on English pubs in the USA?
It seems to me all they do is put up a dart board and a phone box and sell Harp..
What is the most realistic pub you have found here in the the US?

Re: English Pubs in the USA
There's one fairly close to where I live (though it requires a drive ) that is, I think, fairly authentic. They haven't gone out of their way to make it a cliché, and it sells a good range of bottled beers, and has four pumps for whatever draft he can get - always a Guiness, usually a Boddy's, and whatever else - Young's, London Pride, etc.
The decor is ad hoc cellar bar - a bit of this and a bit of that, generally a little down-at-heel and therefore IMHO, a pretty good pub.

The George & Dragon in Phoenix is very authentic right down to the dartboard. I haven't been to their Tempe location though, but the Phoenix pub could be mistaken for a nice countryside drinking hole.

We've tried the Ship Inn and thought it was good. The Scoth eggs and sausage rolls were a big dodgy, but otherwise the nearest you can find round here. Might try the Elephant and Castle now I know it exists.

Hmmmm - went to the Elephant & Castle in Ottawa while on a business trip and wasn't too impressed (I didn't realise there was one in San Fran).
Best one I've found is The Crown in Danville http://www.crownpub.com which is run by Brits. There is also one called The Englander http://www.englanderpub.com but thats much more like a bar - but they do have an extensive beer selection.

We found this place in Savannah and were really impressed with it. There was a bagpipe player outside the night we were there, but don't they all?!

Re: English Pubs in the USA
We have two really good English Pubs in Rochester NY.
Montys Corner - Mostly English staff... Quite standard decor (European Flags hanging from the walls)... Newcastle Brown Ale and Boddingtons on tap.
The Old Toad - Completely English staff (who come over as a year out of their Leisure and Tourism course from Sheffield Hallam). Pretty good food and decor. Over 100 European beers available (mostly English and Belgian) including Black Sheep and Theakstons.
Both really good bars with a great atmosphere and worth a visit if you are ever in the area.

Dick O' Dow's in Birmingham, MI (15 mile and old woodward) is really good - http://www.detnews.com/2004/events/0...c03-310103.htm
When I lived up there, I'd go to get a decent pint and stodgy food. Traditional pub, better than most of the poxy bars in the UK.

We haven't been there since the old Chruchills, which really was small and cosy and dark burned down. There is also The Sixpence here in Savannah and 2 teasrooms.
