I don't think you can make blanket comparisons on food prices.
They fluctuate a lot and it also depends on where you live. If you live in a small town, away from large cities, the cost of shipping adds to the cost.

I was astonished (when I lived in AZ) how much bread cost. Way more than the UK. Also, beef may be one of AZ's major products, but that certainly wasn't reflected in prices. i remember staring at the prime rib joints in our local supermarket, astonished at the price of a joint ... $36 :eek:

Yes, you can get some real house bargains in the Phoenix area, but don't get seduced into buying some massive two storey house because your summer electricity bills will make you scream like a girl.

As for prices in the UK. Some things are cheaper, some aren't. There are shops like Primark or TK Maxx where you can get good bargains on clothes. If you buy seasonal veggies, you save a lot. Cigarettes cost a small fortune and the price of petrol makes me weep. However, because we live in a town, I don't use the car very much, so it's not a problem and I have a Fiesta and get about 340 miles on a full tank, so it's more efficient than the car I had in the US.

I've just paid £ 450.00 for a Crown (white porcelain... platinum was also mentioned..I think...) on one of my upper molars at a private UK dentist.

What would it have cost in US ?

I'm particularily interested in the cost in Richmond, Virginia !

UK: In town yesterday on way home I bought a new Roberts Eco Logic2 DAB/FM radio set with rechargeable batteries and connecting adaptor lead with set of 8 batteries which will last for ever more...............................£69.99

My dentist charges around $900 for a crown so prices may have gone up, or maybe it's more expensive here in the Northern states.

It's hard to compare as people have said, but having a quick look around and doing a few google searches it seems to be generally agreed that the UK has 10-20% higher cost of living expenses.

Pretty much all of that shopping list is significantly cheaper than the supermarkets in my area of New England.

And after a weekend in Boston I'm really looking forward to my trip to London next week for some nice, reasonably-priced beer!

The local bar I was going to in Vermont on my last visit (and hope to frequent again many times soon) has 25c draft night on Thursdays. I've not heard of anything better than that anywhere. Shame it's fizzy American gnat's piss, but for 25c I'll drink anything :thumbup:

True but a bit exaggerated. House prices have actually dropped. Inflation is running at 3.1% at the moment so food and clothing is more expensive than it has been previously. You can get around it but you need to shop around. Relative cost of living is extremely hard to calculate. It'll depend on your personal circumstances - what area of the U.S U.K you lived/were living in, respective wages, is your healthcare covered by your employer etc etc..

I have a root canal procedure coming up, which will be followed by a crown. I had the dentist run a schedule of how much each bit will cost.

My out of pocket for the crown is about $500.00 or so, and the insurance covers the rest. Whole procedure will run $920.00. Including what the insurance covers - $2,950.00 :eek:
