Default Engineers

It's not often that engineers talk about pride in their work, they are always too busy, but this guy does it for us. Look particularly at "3) We get it right".

".... what would happen if we were wrong just 2 percent of the time?"...

Well, for starters - cause the worst environmental disasters in US history... and is it not "engineers" who can't figure out how to stop the oil? I guess that is what you get for going with the lowest bidder... certainly outweighs the other 98%...

One could argue that the engineer saying "that would be a bad idea" being over ridden by the managers might account for a good proportion of that 2%.

Ain't the bloody effing truth.

But being an engineer has it's perks. One of my favorite t-shirts is the Top 10 Reasons to Date An Engineer:
Engineers do it to specification.
Can go all night with no hint of fatigue.
Specialized in experimentation
We have significant figures
We know it's not the length of the vector that counts, but how you apply the force.
Implement new ways to induce fluid transfer
We know the right hand rule
Free body diagrams.
Find out what those other buttons on your calculator do.
The world does revolve around us... We pick the coordinate system.

This book was one of the most fascinating I've ever read - how they designed and built the Moon Lander for the Apollo program. Not only for the techie stuff, but the management, the trade-offs, the commitment, the sacrifice ... made me proud to be an engineer!

At least you macro-engineers can tell if you got it right or wrong!

With my engineering, I have to spend $$$ on electron microscope time and failure analysis to find out if I put the individual atoms in the right places!

NOTE: That isn't mine in the picture, but it's pretty much what I do.
