Re: Elementary or Middle School?

Has anyone registered their kids just before a holiday period? It looks like the first chance we're going to get is a couple of days after we get there (all the paperwork is packed in goodness knows which one of the 12 bags we're taking) and They only have a few days left before the end of term.... I'm wondering if they will actually start next week or wait until the start of the new term in January....

I would do all the paperwork for enrollment when you get there with the understanding that they will not officially start until after the holidays (that's when our new arrivals start in my district...we get a lot of holiday transfers due to the air force base close by). It will not be the end of the term probably for their school but at least they can get a feel for the place before 3rd quarter starts (probably day after Martin Luther King Day).

We registered our son at his school back in May when we were over for our house hunting trip, ready to start straight after the summer holidays (we actually moved in July). It wasn't a problem to register ahead of time.

If the school suggest it, maybe the kids could go in for those last few days of schools - might be a fun time of year to be in school what with Christmas stuff going on etc?

Just to give you all an update...

We have registered the kids at school. Went into the elementary and they referred us to the Local School District office where we sat down with the lady who deals with all the immigrant registrations. She told us that they don't go on ability, but on the Age of the child for what grade they go into - The boys are 11 years old, so they are putting them into grade 5 Elementary.

They are adopting Twin 2's IEP from England over here, and we have a meeting with the District Special Needs officer and the school special needs officer on the 5th January to go through his IEP with them and discuss an action plan. She also told us that the boys will go into 6th Grade no matter what happens in the Fall, so we don't need to worry about them being held back in Elementary. If the boys are behind, they will use whatever intervention is needed to support them and bring them up to speed rather than holding them back.

I'm much happier now its all sorted out, and they were really helpful - a big weight off our minds!

Glad to hear that it all worked out. The school district sound really helpful, especially where your twins are concerned - kudos to them:thumbsup:
