It is only "Emergency Medicaid" and that is very narrowly defined as someone in an immediate life threating situation.

I'm about to jump into the citizenship paperwork for myself, and then as soon as I naturalize I will be sponsoring my parents to move over. I say sponsoring.... i'm as poor as a church mouse and they are fairly wealthy so they will be paying for themselves :) The healthcare thing concerns them some - my step-dad is very overweight. I hope we can find some good insurance combined with perhaps a savings plan for those extra costs that might come up. They can definitely afford it, with good planning

Interesting

I only know one person who I would expect could definitely afford it.

I'm sure I could start the process of bringing her here, but what about things like medicare? I'm fishing, it's not bad at this moment, but there's a time in the near future that I would have to think about this.

Medicare doesn't cover much, she'll need a secondary insurance as well, Medicare doesn't cover any prescriptions either

Brilliant, that's roughly what we expected, to be honest, my sister lives 200 yards away and she has 3 kids, so it's only an option, she is due to have surgery on her only good eye, so if that goes wrong, she is completely blind, it may be that we have her for 3 months of the year!!
Again, thanks everyone, you have all been of help, we are not even sure what's happening yet, so I was just looking for a start.

Travel insurance becomes increasing difficult to obtain with age...not to mention health issues. It cost approx $1000 for my then 83 yr old MIL to travel to the US for 2 weeks. I dread to think what it would cost for 3 months. There was also a limit to the number of days in the US they would cover. Travelling when you are over 80 is not as easy as you may think.

Yes and even with travel insurance if something would happen to her she would only be able to go to an ER, no GP look treat her .

80yr old FIL is trying to get reasonably priced travel/health insurance at the moment for a 3 week trip over here in the summer, but is finding it very hard to find any. He is very fit for his age, but they don't take that into consideration.

We found it extremely difficult for over 80s to get travel insurance. We used Allclear.co.uk. The company we first booked with cancelled the policy because MIL's doctor changed her meds. Check if you have to inform them of any illness or change in meds between the time you took the policy out and date of travel.

I used to work in the Insurance Industry.

My Parents lived to their 80's.

My Grandparenst to their 90's.

I was just thinking, if I had such a business, how much I would need to charge......

Obamacare is well over $1,000 a month and not as comprehensive.

And a thousand deductible too for some.

I cannot believe all the years my mom visited the States with no insurance, no one thought about it back then, lucky nothing happened.

My sister has her travel insurance automatically through her bank, it's the emergency flight back home that's makes it so expensive.

Law of averages as you get older.

You need a lot of people who have no issues to pay for the one that does.

Your mum was lucky. I know someone who was in his early 30's when he had a major stroke during a holiday in Florida. They had 2 preschool children...they had to fly her sister out to take the boys back to the UK. The wife stayed in Florida for several weeks until her husband was well enough to be repatriated to the UK. That was 25 years ago and he is still in a wheelchair.

If it can happen...it will....
