Egg,Chips & beans

Just a thought from dinner last night. I was cooking myself some fried eggs & oven chips when the wife looked aghast at the combination of eggs, chips & beans with 2 slices of bread & a cuppa. She has also stared at beans on toast too.

Has anyone else had any traditional UK food that has caused aghast looks over here ?

oh yes.

I once made a chip butty.
The wife and kids all looked at me like I'd just shat on the floor of the living room.

At an office potluck I brought in my homemade sausage rolls. My coworkers were curious about them and insisted on eating them hot (even though they still taste good room temperature).

I would love to get my hands on a haggis (lamb please. No beef) but I can't imagine what Americans would make of it. However, I introduced my American spouse to haggis whilst we lived in the UK and he likes it a lot.

Marmite
Salt and vinegar on my chips (or fries)
Salad cream
Cheese and onion crisps (Or most British flavours, for that matter)
Bacon sarnies to us would always include butter, but Americans would actually call them "bacon and butter sandwiches" (They have no idea what sarnies are, either.)
The fact that I hate peanut butter and pickles, yet I love pickled onions

Damn, I could murder a good fry-up now.

Yes... Ive even brought my american born children up on Chip butties, vinegar on lots of things, beans on toast, sardines or kippers on toast with butter, pasties, and cannot live withut my cuppa. :)

Yosser Nov 2nd 2004 3:32 am

Re: Egg,Chips & beans

Yep, still have sasauge, chips and beans with lashings of malt vinegar (they sell Ye old malt vinegar at Target :D ).

I always make sure I have half a slab of white bread with butter to mop up all the ketchup, beans and vinegar juices when I'm done.........ah heaven :)

still have Marmite on toast in the mornings with a cuppa, frosted shreddies, Weetabix or Porridge with Lyons golden syrup.

Usually when I get in from work, I'll have a few slabs of strawberry jam or lemon curd sarnies.

There are some habits that just won't go away, I guess.

I make Toad In The Hole every so often. I got the blank expression when I first made it but when my wife and her familiy tried it, they loved it.

I just need a good recipe for sausage rolls and I'm set :)

Just as an update, I am informed that this Thanksgiving we will be having a Turkey Phal and other exotic Indian dishes for the family dinner. Ah well nice to see I have had some influence on them.

Although I believe my very English pooch has now been seduced by the redneck roadkill lifestyle. We caught him trying to bring a dead squirrel into the house yesterday. YUKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKk

We recently had an international dinner party where my wife made Pie and mash. The only people to eat it was us!!! I think that it was the liccor that turrned them off. The only thing missing for me was the Jellied eels. Now I am sure that would have gone down a real treat.

Ribena caught a friend off-guard.

Not realising it was a concentrate, she poured a glassful of it. She took a big drink of it and, coughing and choking, managed to say "S**t! That's strong!"

I guess they don't do high juices, etc. here?

Another thing somebody thought was strange was when I asked for cream to pour over a piece of apple pie. Has that happened to anybody?

No, no, no! Custard with apple pie is best. My American spouse doesn't understand my fondness for custard.

For Americans, it's ice cream with apple pie.

Custard with pie, custard with crumble, custard with plain sponge cake, custard and steamed pudding. Yummy! :) :)

I'm going to be drooling soon...

Brings to mind a time when I was just a small girl. We hadnt been here very long and had invited neighbours to dinner. We had some nice tins of cream sent over by my Grandma. Well our cats loved the cream as well so we started calling it cats milk. When mum brought out some rhubarb pie with the cream on it they were all curious as to what was all over the pie. We said 'cats milk!' LOL. We were teased about that for a long time after that.

Birds custard. You have to add about 3 bags of sugar to it when preparing.
My wife said "jeez no wonder brits have bad teeth if that's what kids grow up on"
A sadly true statement though...

Have never tried the stuff (and after reading the website as to how it is made I doubt I ever will); however I did just notice last night at the local Publix that they carried Marmite. I suppose that means that other Publix or other chains CAN get it if requested.

no, no actually I'm getting quite a dab hand in the kitchen, I can still watch the cowboys play whilst I peel the spuds, chop the swede etc, it doesn't take me that long to be honest, then I just stick it in the oven and kick back for the rest of the game with a ice cold fosters! :)

There is one thing though, bloody washing up I seem to make quite a mess :p

My American Girlfriend did the best thing in the world ... ever ... last christmas :)

It was my first xmas away from family, and she had managed to pull together the full recipe for a sunday roast ... yorkshire puds, roast potatoes, veggies, gravy (ahhh, bisto!).

It was the best christmas gift :)

Since then, I've introduced her to the joys of deep fat frying chips (she still won't use the fryer though), gravy on everything that stands still long enough and flavoured crisps :D

She is probably fine about having scambled eggs, bacon, saugage (well thats what they call it anyway) and beans all on the same plate along with pan cakes and maple syrup right... gotta say that one grosses me out big time.

Talking about english food... while I was over there a couple of weeks back I brought a bunch of Caramac chocolate back... I hadn't had that in years.
