Default East Rutherford, NJ - thoughts ?

Hi all,

I have a "meeting" scheduled for Monday with a company in East Rutherford, NJ.

I am surprised myself as the H1-B's will be well on their way to being fulfilled for the year, but this company want me to fly out to meet them anyway. I am under no illusion that it may be difficult to get everything processed (assuming they want to make an offer) in time to secure a visa.

I was just wondering if you could provide me with your thoughts on the area anyone that knows the area) and anything that I should know in general about the place - standard of living, reasonable salary amount for a husband, wife, one toddler to live on (I am an accountant, the position is with an insurance company as Asst Controller with view to becoming Controller), taxes etc etc etc.

I will be doing my own research too but anything that any of you could provide or are willing to provide would be GREATLY appreciated.

Many thanks in advance
Craig

Seriously ? The H1's have gone already ? I knew that they would be quick but not this quick.

Do you have an official announcement on that Ray ? Not doubting you, would just like to provide it to these potential suitors.

They are paying but I would rather not put them in that position if they are all gone, and especially if it is the case that I would merely be flying up there on Sunday to return on Tuesday.

Thanks for the info though, much appreciated

Ray, I REALLY appreciate that - thanks very much !

Seems that more and more the only realistic route to get into the US on a VISA (outside marriage and student...) is through an L! internal transfer.

I might have to work on these guys to hire me in Bermuda for a while and then internally transfer me !

H1B is crap anyway if you have a family because your spouse wouldn't be allowed to work....oh, but if the position is with a uni, the quota wouldn't apply so they could still get an H1B, otherwise, you'll be SOL this year.

I don't pretend to know the area but isn't it quite industrial around there? There are plenty of places within 30 mins drive that could be OK, though. You could probably reverse commute from NYC if there's a decent train station nearby.

Would you want to live in the suburbs or in a real city? Where do you live now?

If it isn't a university related position, it's a moot point, so not really worth looking much deeper.

It's not the best place in NJ to live. To live in the city would cost mega bucks.

Hello,

I don't know whether the visas reserved for master's degree graduates of US universities are all gone.

I'd interview if they are paying for your flight, otherwise noooooo.

Hi

Long time Jersey resident here.North Jersey can be very fast pace for a person not use to a metro area, for that reason its important to find the right township to live in.Depending where you are coming from ,the pace can feel abit too much, even more reason why you need a quiet place to live.I have lived in jersey areas from Morristown were there is little crime and the pace is slow( which is about an hour from new york city )to townships only minutes from New york city.Rutherford is about 20-25 minutes out side Manhattan. If you don't mind commuting 20-35 minutes a day to work then townships like Mawah,Hackensack are nice.Rutherford like someone else mentioned, does have an industrial feel to the place. Its right next to highway 46 a very busy throughway, several businesses in the area, including the famous Soprano's strip club called Bada Bing.

Most people in north jersey commute even if its just 10-15 minutes a day.Allthough 30-60 minutes a day is more common. What ever you decide, try to contact a reality company for advice and pricing.A good company I've used is called:Clinton Reality, located in Englewood NJ,they do charge a fee.Come to think of it,another excellent neighborhood is called Englewood Cliffs.A very nice community, abit pricy but very safe and not too far from places to dine, not far from the major throughways used to travel to work. I'm not sure what you are use to paying for rent but get ready for sticker shock.Jersey is a VERY expensive place to live.I don't know how most people manage up there.Getting on the property ladder for someone making less than $80-100 thousand a year is difficult.Living in NYC is basicly a non starter because as expensive as Jersey is,Manhattan is three times more costly, unless your employer provides a package which include housing expenses.Having said all that,Jersey is a fun place to live as long as you make good money.Very exciting to have NYC only minutes away. One thing for sure ,you'll never get bored!

You like it there? I stayed in Motown and Lake Hiawatha for a few years.Enjoyed the peace and quiet out there and the Indian summers were amazing.I later moved to Hackensack in order to cut down on my commute to NYC.
