Re: dv lottery
Google the dv lottery!
British citizens are not eligible for it. I think it goes on the country of birth, thus, if you were born in England you are not eligible.

Like healthcare costs, vacation time, job protection/workers' rights, redundancy payments, maternity/paternity pay, child benefit, etc?
How much do you actually know about the US? Do the terms deductible, co-pay, workers' comp, at will employment mean anything to you?
It's all academic, because you clearly have no chance of getting to the US other than on holiday (unless you marry a Yank...), but please do not persuade yourself that the UK is the pits and the US is the land of milk and honey.
Oh, and US houses are made of sticks of wood and often built like garden sheds...
As for politicians with their snouts in the trough - we've got plenty of those too. May I suggest you google for Rod Blagojevich.........

You are not going to get a visa to come to the US...therefore unless you mor have a ton of money arry a US citizen you cannot legally live and work here.
End of story.

Re: dv lottery
The people you 'know of' probably married US citizens, that's how most people that are not headhunted get in.
You just have to ask yourself if your skills are specialised enough that you will be headhunted, and have a company spent thousands of dollars on your visa application, and wait for a year or so for you to start work? Particularly with so many Americans out of work at the moment - why would an employer spend all that money and go through all the hassle & wait, when they can just get an American straight away and for free?!? Realistically, it's just not going to happen.
Sorry to be so negative, but from what you've told us you have no chance - concentrate on Canada instead where your trade is actually wanted and needed, and you stand a good chance of getting a visa.

Does it matter? She may have married a yank, or been headhunted for a job there, or had a US citizen relative sponsor her, or won the DV lottery. It doesn't matter, as none of that is relevant to you anyway so how is it going to help?!?
We could have moved to the US, but my husband is in a very specialist occupation and was headhunted after speaking at conferences over there and working with the US government. So that's how we would have got in if we'd chosen to - but that's not relevant to you is it? Everybody's circumstances are different.
No point worrying about how others did it - just read the Wiki and you'll understand the only ways you can do it.

The only ways in to the US are in the Wiki article you've already been given - and sorry, but as a welder you are not eligible for any of them. Trades are just not needed in the US, only those with specialist skills and advanced education are.
