Well which is it? Is the duvet the outer covering or the inner contents? Juswus said it is the inner and you are saying it is the outer.

The duvet fits inside the duvet cover. The duvet cover is normally washable like a sheet. The duvet if it is made of synthetic material can also be washed...if it is made from down it must be dry cleaned.

Once you have a duvet you'll never go back. I had one when I lived in Luxembourg over 10 years ago and promptly bought one on my return. That's all we have in the house now.

To me, a duvet is a downfilled comforter and you buy the cover to encase the comforter so it does not have to be cleaned as often and also to match you bedroom decor.

People sometimes refer to the duvet cover as a duvet instead of giving it it's full title.

Whenever I'm in England I almost always end up buying duvet cover sets, usually from John Lewis, Debenhams or Marks & Spencers and even from Laura Ashley if the sales are on. I actually went into a Primark shop for the first time last Summer and bought a duvet set for our bed for about 12 pounds...it's ok but the quality isn't that great, similar to IKEAs.

The 'Homegoods' stores over here sometimes have duvet covers...I've even spotted some 'Sheridan' (Australia) ones which are of superb quality...snap them up if you see this brand.

Just a word of warning, if you are trying at all to buy duvet covers for duvets you bought in the UK they are different bloody sizes !!!!:curse: looked into this before we came out as someone had told me but find it frustrating. There is only a difference of maybe 5cm but if you want the bed to look smart and the duvet to stay in place they need to fit together. We ended up buying a new set of linen before we left UK so that I did not have this problem. However we have now bought 2 sinle bed (why oh why call them twins ???) and we now have the search like you all for duvets of comforters to go on them. All the department stores so far have tried sending us to the kids dept for single sets.arghhhhhhhhhh And is it just me or are most of the sets on sale so over fancy ? myself I am a big fan of the minalmist look so I guess I will be heading back to Ikea for the 3rd time in 2 weeks.....the joy

i got a comforter in target that is king size - plain white and comes in 2 parts that clip together to allow three variations on thickness/warmth. JUST like a UK duvet. I put it in a target king size duvet cover and it fits perfectly. same comforter went in a northern nights brand (QVC) duvet cover and also fits perfectly. Its just like what i had at home.

I wash down duvets. I've got three kids and they do terrible things to our duvets I couldn't afford to keep getting them dry cleaned.

I did get a down pillow dry cleaned recently and that was $30

I get duvet covers from Target, but they aren't quite the same size as my duvet. Lovely quality though, to my surprise.

When we came here 12 yrs ago duvet covers were extremely hard to find. I made my own duvet covers by sewing two sheets together. Thankfully they are much easier to find now.
