Does it affect domicile status if you keep renewing?

With UK domicile, anything can be considered. Maintaining a British passport is most certainly a significant factor. That said, assuming you are asking this in the context to exposure to UK IHT, effective April 6, 2025, the UK is removing domicile and replacing it with tax residence as the criteria for IHT liability. If you’ve haven’t been tax resident in the UK for the last 10 years before you die, only your UK assets will be liable to IHT (subject to any tax treaty benefits claimed).

I believe at the times mentioned above the maximum time allowed in the UK as a tourist from the USA was 6 months. Certainly in 2016 when I was moving back to become tax resident I needed to enter the UK on my UK passport. Same goes for 2017 and 2019 when I left the USA with no return ticket.

Actually, now you mention it, I did that in November 2023 - flew Boston to Heathrow on a one-way ticket. I’m pretty sure at no point did Jet Blue or anyone at the airport departure ask me about my UK status. (I got the one way ticket because I had no idea how long I was staying, and there seemed to be little difference in the price.)

Fwiw I am dual uk/us. I literally renewed my us pp this week ($130) as it expired 6 months ago (4-6 week delivery) and I believed that prevented me from legally leaving usa. It occurred to me I could get away by travelling on my uk pp, but I don't believe that would be legal. My k1 visa expired 20 years ago!
