Default Driving Calais, Maine to Erie, NY - Any ideas on route and B&Bs`.

My wife and I reside in NB, Canada.

Any input please on good routes from Calais, Maine to Erie, NY.

Also any cute towns en-route with nice overnight accommodations, such as B&Bs?

We have allowed 3 days each way, this Summer.

Calais Maine - Augusta Maine - ( cross country via NH to) Montpelier Vermont - Burlington Vermont - (Via Champlain ferry to) Plattsburgh NY - Through the beautiful Adirondack National Park thru Saranac Lake/Tupper Lake/Long lake/Old Forge to - Utica NY - I90 to Syracuse - Buffalo and then Erie (which is in PA not NY) unless theres another one I don't know about.

Have you thought about posting in the rec.travel.usa-canada forum?

I-495 south, I-95 south to NH line, US4 west through Concord, I-93 south to I-89 north to VT exit 2, US 4 west stopping at Woodstock VT overnight (Canterbury House B+B run by an English lady).
US4 west through Rutland to NY, US 4 south to route 149 in Fort Ann, right on 149 to I-87 south at Lake George, Exit 12 take 67 west to Amsterdam, I-90 west to Erie PA.

It will take 2 days or 3 if you make a short diversion to Niagra Falls.

I-495 is a heave at the mo though, as is I-95 into the I-295 around Portland, but getting off I-95 at Gardener and then through Portland would skip a few tolls and be quicker, even with the shite roadworks, it saves 45 mins, which google directions doesn't tell you about....also, as it's through route one, lovely towns along the way like Camden, Rockland, if you want to go scenic, though avoid Lincolnville and sideline it through Belfast going past Bank of America because of the bridge and roadworks, will save ages, and then you'll get into Camden the other way, which is lovely route, just not on the sea....but if you want quick, route 1 instead of route 1A, and head down past China towards Augusta, don't follow the google directions of going left and around the round abouts, it'll add a good 25 mins of driving through a dive, just continue on a few mins and you'll be on I-95 via the coastal inter-connector.

Drive for hours, and before you hit Portland, stop off at Freeport, it's a lovely little town and an outlet town at that, so very cheap shopping, great stuff like LL Beans, Polo, Levi's etc...anyway, Portland, old port is a crunt for parking, but it's a lovely part of town....and then more I-95 to get out of the state, have a stretch at Kittery service stop, the petrol is the cheapest for miles, and it's also the last service stop for miles that's got a nice clean bog....there's hardly any service stops in NH, MA etc...

No you are correct - we are heading for a point 30 miles short - just inside the NY line.
