Default Does your grocery store spray water on the veggies?

Whats the point in this if they are already being kept chilled?. Our local flashes a little light when the water is about to hit and then you hear these little thunder claps.

Sounds like the system in your grocery store is the deluxe model. The grocery stores I visit just spray the produce intermittently.

It's a damn pain 'cos it makes the produce waterlogged and speeds up the rotting process.

The main grocery store does that here too, it's well annoying because half the weight of the veg is water, and it's all pretty rank and rots quickly...don't get it, and it annoying me.

The health co-op doesn't do it though, which is good...they keep some things in a little water, like the herbs, but most are in baskets, which is nice, bit pricey though, but worth it for the lettuce at least.

its cheaper for them to spray water and have that evaporate over time than it is to keep the veggies cool enough for the heat NOT to affect them. They still chill it.. but it doesn't require half as much energy

but they over water the veg to buggery... and with the amount of A/C in the grocery store, there really isn't that much need to chill and water them at all really...

I'll bet some kind of focus group found that seeing little droplets of water on the fruit and veg is appealing to some people.

I'm sure I remember seeing recipe cards or adverts or something of that sort with droplets of water on the apples so the advertisers must think it makes the fruit and veg look good. It's all about sales.

Yep, seems to happen in the local supermarkets (Hello Safeway). There you are, checking out the carrots, and soem canned thunder comes along and it starts to 'rain'.

Honestly, who wants to shove soaking stuff in the little plastic bag, only for it to rot quicker. Means you end up buying more veg sooner I guess....

Nope. Most of the grocery area seems to be well air conditioned do it's not necessary.

It helps keep the veggies fresh.

In their natural state plants replace water they lose to the atmosphere by absorbing it through their roots. When plants lose more water than they take in, they wilt and eventually die. In the grocery store, plants have no way to absorb water naturally from the ground. So they need to be sprayed to keep them from wilting.

So now you know

Thanks Google

yeah, but there over watered, and if there fresh, they don't need to be sprayed, only if there kept on the shelves for a week...
