Sugar and a lot of oil and also chemicals which make you addicted. And you should avoid all those all-you-can-eat buffets. Lost about 30 lb over three yrs after leaving the US, the fattest nation in the world.

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?
In the first few weeks of being here I put on weight at an alarming rate. I am now subjecting myself to a couple of months of Nutrisystem so that I don't have to make the choice to stop eating eat healthily...
...Yes, I am aware the Nutrisystem food is full of preservatives, and that I am actually only postponing the whole choice/portion issue, but I want to wear one of my nice dresses this Christmas! |

I lost over 10 pounds wafter arriving, mostly through lots of physical work, moving furniture etc, and then having a physical job instead of a backside-spreading desk job, as I'd had in the UK for 15 years. I'd like to lose a few more pounds, but I'll probably have to cut out soda and potato chips to achieve that. Bigger portions, High Frustose Corn Syrup (and other sugars) added to processed foods, and the Sedentary Society are the three main reasons why Americans are on balance an obese nation. I used to see the occasional pavement whale in London, but here in Oregon it's on another scale, and this is a city where outdoor recreation activities abound on our doorstep. When you get so fat you need an electric cart to do your shopping, you ought to realise something has gone horribly, horribly wrong. |

I'm not getting that big....I weighed myself today and was just under 140 pounds.....still pretty skinny, I've just gotten rid of my little podge by eating well for a few days. I wish I could put on weight as easy as i could lose it! I was going the gym for 2 hours a day a few months ago and I didn't notice any change in my body! boohoo!

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?
I fluctuate up and down. It's all too easy to eat out and get fat due to portion size and rich sauces here! Salad's are what really get me though. I've taken to asking for just lemons with mine, or ocassionally oil & vinegar on the side.
I struggle with the no-walking and driving everywhere, and although I like to run, running in Houston isn't much fun (can't stand treadmills so has to be on the road for me). I'm hoping if I stick at it I might eventually get used to running in the heat... It's finally getting to be at a temp when I can bear to run outside, long may it last!! |

And possibly local high school? Our high school indoor gym track is open for walkers/runners in the winter months before school starts apparently, but not tried it as I can't be arsed and we only just moved here :D |
Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?
Our local mall has a walking club...apparently the "outside" track (meaning the outside lane of the indoor corridor) is a mile and if you happen to stroll into it during walking club hours you are likely to be mown down by a bluerinse pushing a zimmer frame at 20mph...that'll be the mother in law....

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?
God, you wimpy people do go on about 'portion control' and 'they put so much food on the plate'
When i go out to eat i wanna EAT, i don't want half an effing carrot and some limp looking asparagus thing with a teeny weeny bit of what used to be chicken befor it was skinned and steamed to death because if they fried it the world would come to an end stuck on top. :p Fine, if you can't eat it all take it home, you'll feel good about yourself but still hungry, i , on the other hand, being a greedy bugger will eat everything in sight, leaveing fat, full and forefilled.:D:D Charles PS, going out for a fish fry tonight :thumbsup: |
Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?
First time I came I gained 10 lbs in 2 weeks, now I'm pretty stable at 145. I'd like to be 140 but do have mild anorexic tendencies so if I stick at 145 that's a good sign. I think I generally eat better here because I'd got into a pattern of eating the same thing every day in England whereas here I vary my diet more.
