Does anyone else struggle with the diet?

I've put on about a stone and I'm always feeling like crap because it's all I seem to be eating right now.....I know it's my own fault and I could cook better things but whenever we go out there seems to be very little choice in healthy food.....I want a decent Sunday dinner!

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?

Yes. And god forbid I eat out they give me enough food for the whole family on my plate.
I've been trying to stick to the small versions of meals when possible, and I cook at home a lot.
So much to try I gain a lot when I first arrived.

Driving everywhere instead of walking is my downfall.

Ditto for my husband...he gained 20 pounds very quickly when he first came to the USA. He didn't walk as much, he ate out more often, and started eating fast food. He's lost half the weight now, and is eating healthier, but still isn't in the same shape he was before coming to the USA 6 years ago.

Yep - been on a "diet" and lost about 50lbs after gaining that much when I moved here. Quit ordering lunch with the guys at work and started packing my own. No more takeaway except we have pizza fridays at work and I have one slice. Ordering appetizers as mains instead of the massive things they give you.. it's really sickening how much food is served here.

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?

Been here since beginning of Sept and have lost about a stone I think. I don't know if it's the heat so I'm less hungry or because the plates in the apartment are smaller. Either way I'm going to be screwed in winter or when my plates arrive!

We both gained weight when we moved back to the US (although I didn't find that I lost weight in the UK.) I don't go out and eat fast food (although hubs does, teriyaki, etc for lunches) and we have become more conscious of what we eat. I suppose portion control is the biggest culprit, that and sugar. We don't drink soda (diet or otherwise.) We try very hard to limit processed foods, but that is a big problem as well. That and not enough exercise. So we joined a gym last year and now have the fun job of trying to fit it into a busy schedule.....

But here's something to help.....:D

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?

Yes its very easy to gain weight over here - I certainly did the first couple of months after I arrived. Once I realised it was happening I made some changes - when you eat out the portions are huge over here, so I now rarely finish everything that is on my plate. I am also very concious of what I order from the menu to avoid fattening sauces etc.

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?

Whenever I go back to the UK I always eat and drink a lot more than I do here and I still never gain any weight - in fact I usually have lost a few pounds when I get back here!! I think it is because I do a lot more walking when I am there (especially in Derry, Northern Ireland - it is very hilly). I have a desk job here - sit behind a computer for 8 hours a day - doesn't help at all with the weight!! I try and walk each evening when I get home (weather permitting) but the clock will change in a couple of weeks and it will get dark early, so that will stop - will have to get on my stationary bike!!

You're lucky....we normally go back at Christmas, and the usual festivities combined with trying to cram in as many fish and chips/kebabs/curries and parmos mean I normally have about 8-10lbs excess baggage on the return trip. But its always gone by the end of Jan, and I'm back to the same weight as when my son was born 9 years ago. This year we went in July, and the excess 8lbs is still hanging on.....apparently that happens when I get old according to my not very sympathetic wife!

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?

I'm confused what do you consider healthy? For me it is a dinner of chicken or pork or fish, fresh veggie and perhaps rice pilaf or some type of potato. I can order this when I'm out at a restaurant as well and never mind about the large portions as I eat what until I feel comfortably satisfied and then doggie bag the rest for the next day. I paid for it and I'm not embarrassed to take it home and reheat it in the mircowave ;-)

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?

The portion sizes here when you eat out are too big but it is deemed acceptable to ask the waitress to wrap up the leftovers to go and eat them for lunch the next day. Since I've got here I have taken up hiking which was something I never thought I would do - too many miserable school camping holidays to the Lake District - but the scenery and the weather is really beautiful this time of year and there are lots of trails. I think when winter hits it'll be too tempting to sit indoors and drink. There is some loose talk about going cross country skiing but we'll see what the enthusiasm is like when the time comes. I suspect i'll be like a beached whale by the time spring comes around.

I put on a stone or more after the first few months. For me I think the main reason was comfort eating because I felt so miserable.

Problem I have is that even when ordering something that looks healthy on the menu, if I forget to ask them, by the time it arrvies at the table some little sod of a sous-chef has reverted to default mode of slathering a perfectly healthy meal with great gobs of butter. Or cheese. Or both.... I'm sure they must be bonused on the basis of average calories per plate dispensed.....

Portion size control is easy if I go with the wife, we often order 1 main course and split it. Or add a starter if the dogs gonna get lucky. Problem comes if I eat alone....willpower needs company!

Re: Does anyone else struggle with the diet?

Yes, you have to be very careful otherwise you just slip into that mode of automatically cleaning your plate at restaurants. I usually end up taking loads home for lunch the next day. The wife and I occasionally get it right by ordering appetizers only or sharing entrees. But it takes a conscious effort.

Sugar and a lot of oil and also chemicals which make you addicted. And you should avoid all those all-you-can-eat buffets. Lost about 30 lb over three yrs after leaving the US, the fattest nation in the world.

My wife and I were in Gander Mountain on Saturday & I was looking at the display of jeans. I noticed that at least 80% of the pairs of jeans on the display were 36 inch waist and larger.. very few 30s and 32s. I'm sure that twenty or thirty years ago, 32 or 34 was the average size and they had plenty of 28s and 30s.. possibly the average age of people buying jeans has gone up during that period, but even then it is a dramatic difference.

You could play "esc" for hours though.. the colours come out different depending on when you press esc.. keep track of your score, and before you know where you are, going home time :)

In the Carolina's it's hotdogs with chilly everywhere you go! We hate them so steer clear but the alternatives are usually burgers or pulled pork BBQ so either way it's all bad for you, full of calories and about the only thing on offer wherever you go!

Watch out for salads, unless it's a vinegrette, a couple teaspoons of dressing is a serving, and those things are in their 100's of calories...get dressing on the side and dip fork into it and then grab salad or you'll turn in to a blob :D

There are plenty of snow shoe walking trails down your neck of the woods, Assabasett River Trails is a good one out in Maynard/Stow area...

You've been here for only 6 months. You've probably lost weight due to all the stress caused by the move. Once you settle down and get into the groove, there's a high chance you'll gain weight. But of course it depends on individual will or your lifestyle.

I don't lose weight through stress, I gain it. Half the weight I lost was gained in the month before moving
I cook on average 6 nights out of 7 though. And I don't work, so don't often have lunch out. Yet.
