Dishwashers
#1
I'm renting a house and the dishwasher is old and rubbish. I want to buy a new one but given that hubby is on an H1b and I'm still undecided as to whether we'll be trying to make things permanent I don't want to spend a fortune on something I can't take back to the UK.
I had a Miele in the UK and that has spoiled me for other dishwashers, oh how I loved the Miele, but they cost the earth and I've already e-mailed them and conversion isn't an option.
So, anyone have any suggestions on what makes and models are good in the dishwasher field, also what brands to stay away from. I am looking to spend no more than $500 - $600.
Cheers

Dunroving's right though. I do remember seeing a Consumers Report from last year that tested dishwashers. Maybe I can find details...
BTW, if you're renting, did the dishwasher come with the property? If so, surely it's the responsibility of the rental company/owner of the property to replace it if it's knackered?

I know what you mean about the quality of the German-made Miele products.
I had to sell our Miele vacuum cleaner when we left Singapore as they have the same voltage as the UK there - an American family bought it and thought it was wonderful.
When I arrived in the States my husband had already bought a vacuum cleaner - a US made 'Eureka'. It was so crappy. After we acquired our dog the vac had to go as it just couldn't cope with the hairs.
I replaced it with the same Miele cleaner I had in Singapore (with the electric Power Brush) and although it cost more than the domestic ones it's worth every penny.
By the way, my sister in England has the upright Dyson so I was able to compare. She hates it (and I wasn't at all impressed) as it is heavy and sooo noisy! The Miele is almost whisper quiet - and I don't know about the rest of you but just about every guy I know (husband, son, brother, male in-laws) can't stand the sound of a vac and complain loudly that they want them switched off! My sister has to use her Dyson when her husband is out as he complains so much about the noise it makes!
I eventually want to replace my very old fashioned top loading washing machine for a European style one, but sadly it doesn't seem that you can get Mieles here (yet).

Yes Englishmum I had a dyson, I hated it. Noisy and just not very practical for a family with four children. (they do have the miele dishwashers here but they start around $1000, which is more than I want to pay for something I have to leave behind)
I am renting and if the dishwasher was broken I'm sure my landlord would replace it. It's not though, it's just old and not that great, plus it's not very space efficient and with six of us we need the space. I don't want to hassle my landlord, he's been really great so far (he actually gave us money for a christmas present and to get us to stay rather than go elsewhere he gave us a rent decrease this month when we redid the contract for another year)
I have never have a landlord anywhere give us anything
I never thought of consumer reports, thanks for that tip guys.
The kitchen aid has been my favourite looking one thus far and it has the stainless steel interior (like the miele) but I still want to make sure it's the best in the price range. Don't want to get a duffer.
