Re: Discussion: Do you agree with this lifestyle?
First off I think most of the Cinema's in the SF bay area are no way as good as the TX ones, over here they are tiny not well maintained.
I still enjoy going to the cinema but it gets over crowded, long queue's just to buy a drink, mobile phones, people talking through the movie, people moving up and down etc. I really hate watching PG movies because you get all the kids talking non stop.
I think first off, if the movies scripts got better and had better storylines then that would make up with all the annoying things that we see when we go to watch a movie.
I still enjoy going but I send more of my money with Netflix and watch about 3-6 movies a week.

I like to watch my porn at home but do enjoy going out to the cinema, you cant beat the taste of overpriced popcorn, hotdogs that have sat on the heater for 4 hours, people coughing all the way through the movie. Its great

Where we currently live (Grand Rapids, MI) we have a great theater close by that has stadium seating, TempurPedic cushioning in the seats so your a$$ doesn't go to sleep, and they have IMAX which my husband and I love. We love to go to the cinema...but only go when there is a film we really want to see on the big screen. We plan to see Batman and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in IMAX.
Unfortunately we are leaving our favorite theater behind as we are moving to my home town which is very small. The nearest IMAX to us which shows movies is 6 hours away in Chicago.
I've always felt seeing a great movie on a very big screen is kind of magical and thrilling. I admit to having been unfortunate enough at times to sit near people who annoyed the crap out of me on occasion...but it is infrequent enough for me to continue to want to take my chances and keep seeing movies on the big screen.

I think the original question is interesting - where have you seen all these polls? Are they on-line/TV by chance? I would imagine that the people likely to answer them then are the ones who are more likely to spend time on-line (and hence use IM etc) or the ones who like to watch TV - in their own homes.
That said, I think the poster who said introverts are given a greater opportunity now to live the lifestyle they are comfortable with is probably right - it's all about personal choice - as long as there is a market for corporates in making that option available :-)
On a tangential note - did you know that movie theater owners get a greater percentage of ticket sales revenues the longer a movie plays - so they get 10% of the revenue the first weekend, 20% the rest of the first week, 25% the next weekend etc. (The movie studio gets the rest). This is causing problems because Hollywood is putting out more movies now and the pressure on theaters is always to be putting on new movies - so the owners revenues go down and the prices at the concession stands go up because that is where the owners can make some money. (And I learned all that from the Christian Science Monitor - which surprised me).

I think people communicate more with each other but the quality is going down. Short sentences on posts/e-mail/text/soundbites.
I used to speak in public. I even wnet on a few training courses to make me better. Now I just drone on in conference calls and noone can see my excellent body language - right now I'm moving my hand around like Magnus Pike..
