This might help: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/home.htm

$4.95 for a month, but worth it if it helps you sort out the crap ones from the decent ones.

Sony DCR-HC32. Zeiss lens, docking station, remote, touch screen, cheap as you like, about $649 if I recall. You would pay a lot more for the DVD ones, but as I prefer to edit on the computer, made no difference to me, and the Mini-DV ones are less expensive.

Sony for movies, best for the money...for dslr's, Canon is the best for the money, unless you already have a Nikon slr as you can re-use your old Nikkor glass.

See here

We have a Canon ZR200 but it is not the best in low-light conditions. Other than that it is excellent for the money.

I don't think the DVD ones are much more. I got one free with some Marriott Rewards points I had built up with business travel, when I looked around they seemed to be about $500. There's easy to find DVD ripping software so you can then edit them on a PC (although I haven't bothered trying yet - just been copying onto regular size DVD's).

I think it depends on how much you want to spend but I was looking for one a few weeks ago and found this site handy.
