My index finger has worn down an inch or so deleting emails, which, had I sense to filter spam to my trash account would have resulted in my index finger being as perfect as its twin on my left hand.

The trials of modern life!

I have no store cards...I have an Costco Amex card and my bank's platinum Mastercard (because some retailers won't take Amex). Both are automatically paid in full from my bank account each month. The reason I refuse store cards is because the more CCs the more difficult it is to keep track of them ie paying them on time.

Seems my email is always full of "buy this - great discounts" adverts, a lot more than I am used to.

I suppose we can't blame them - they're desperate for sales. But like many others - I'm not desperate to spend bunches of money just now, and I'm tired of having to constantly delete ads.
If you don't want to receive emails like this, just unsubscribe.

I am on a lot of email lists for both online shops and independent shops but I don't mind receiving the emails, especially at this time of year (shopping for Christmas presents).

Wow, that does surprise me.

I know what you mean by unsubscribing - but quite a few things I'm getting are from places that should have my email - like Quicken wanting me to upgrade, Dell (computer I have) wanting to sell me another, etc. So it is people that use my email for things I do want - but also a bunch I don't.

I didn't mean to complain as much about having to delete the emails (minor annoyance) as that it seemed like more of them, and extra desperate this year.

It is however a reasonable proxy for mail-order retail.

It was along time coming, DHL was never really able to compete with FedEx and UPS and had a poor image in the US.

Wouldn't surprise me to see UPS or Fedex impose some layoffs either.

UPS has a large operation in Louisville, KY (my hometown). They went on record as saying they won't be hiring as many seasonal workers for the holidays this year. I suppose this means they are hurting too.

Yep, a lot of people are urting financially. Less money being spent on deliveries, means less money being spent on presents, also less packages being sent means less labour needed for the distribution, which also means less manufacturing/imports, less cardboard boxes (ever thought about the people that make them?) less printing and media supplies. It's a knock on effect.
Most companies are paring down where possible because making do with less staff is a quick and directly noticeable reduction in costs when trying to cut overheads.

Haste to pile on but I don't think we are anywhere close to the bottom of the barrel yet either. There are some tough times ahead for everyone.

I read about that also. Hey, we are in a recession and more and more people losing their savings and their jobs. You can't float an economy if you have nothing to use for bouyancy.
