I think it's time you accepted that kick boxing is not really your sport.

That's it - I am never going to see a doctor in this country. It's trips back to the UK every time for me. Only joking, but if they even suggested having it done I'd sue for emotional distress.

cool - obviously you've been watching too many Austin Powers films

i think dentists over here are guided by the american obsession with appearance - i.e. having shiny white perfect teeth is key whereas maybe in the UK there is less care about the aesthetics and more concentration on the dental HEALTH

the issue for me is HEALTH if i need fillings then i need fillings - but when the US dentist tells me I need 8 times as many as the UK dentist (in an affluent leafy part of hertfordshire).......

HMMMMMMM....... - I like your porsche doctor %$*@....

And there's the constant x-ray thing. I'm sure my jaw glows in the dark now. And I've never even had any serious work done on my teeth.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh - US dentists!!!

Before moving to the US I saw my British dentist for a check-up and cleaning. Was told that one filling 'is a bit old and probably will have to be replaced in a year or so'.

Saw US dentist c. 4 months later for check-up (was free, i.e. covered by DH's insurance, so might as well go...).

"Ma'm - your require 7500 bucks of work!!!"

No thank you. Went elsewhere and - 'miraculously' - no work other than filling mentioned above was considered necessary.

And the moral of the story? When a US dentist quotes silly money for work you're not sure about, get a second opinion!

Dental care sucks over here...my sister had a tooth ache when in NY, dentist wasn't going to do anything, but then when she said she worked for BA, he suddenly took care of everything, yanked a tooth, filled in two teeth and made a crown or somin'...anyway, turns out, shen back in blighty to see her dentist, wrong tooth was pulled out, and that tooth only needed a filling, other teeth were fine, so she was well pissed...

I've yet to try a dentist here...but now have insurance, so might see one for a check up...but dental schools are supposed to be good because there cheap and they wont' rip you off...

yeah, what's that all about? $200 for it, and then cost of check up, and cost of cleaning...don't think so somehow...

Why let the evidence of your own senses get in the way of a good stereotype? (PS I agree with the initial post - I needed a filling done here and after the drilling phase, my dentist asked me "isn't this different to what you're used to?" and wouldn't believe me when I said "no". I don't think he realised that we have anaesthetic in the UK too).

No I have lived in Europe and travelled extensively. Unfortunately, I once let an Austrian butcher, I mean dentist, work on my teeth.
