The "problem" with DDR memory is that you need to buy pairs of modules. Assuming that you have 4 slots when you buy 1GB it will be 2x512 which means you decrease the amount you can add in the future because you have used up 2 slots with smaller modules, unless you junk the original modules and start from scratch. I have 1.25GB in my laptop and even though I don't do anything special with it (no games, just work), I wish I had more.

Aye, it's pretty cheap - http://www.memory.com/item.asp?item=DD003 512mb $48

But did see a place that had a deal for $30 for a 512mb stick of 3200

I have the same monitor. PC Display will be set to default settings. Screen will look lousy. Go to Display properties/Settings & change to 1280 x 1024, 32 high bit, plus any other settings you choose. I have come across a couple of people who sent them back because they thought screen was not good. They called Dell, who did not offer them adjustment advice, Dell said "Thats a software problem/setup, you have to buy Software tech pkg from them."
I have had 4 Dells, I think overall the best out there. Probably the best of the worst HARDWARE Help.
Did you buy the extended warranty?
Enjoy the new PC.

Dell had the 4gig upgrade, but it was an extra $480 bucks. No thanks, not at the moment.

We didn't buy the extended warranty in answer to frrussre's question. And thanks for the monitor heads up.

Anybody have any input on HP systems? I also will be getting a new computer soon and would like to hear opinions on HP. I currently have a Dell dimension that I first got in 1998. It's been worth every dollar but can't keep up with our demands anymore. I had a gateway2000 prior to that and I didn't have a problem with that either, but nowadays gateways look rather expensive.

Just replaced power supply on an 18-month-old HP computer w/ AMD that conked out without warning. Not impressed! Also, it takes the best part of 3 or 4 hours to strip the crap out of the installed software and HP spyware so you can actually see the desktop for the freakin icons. I can't usually be bothered actually doing it when working with HPs these days -- I just nuke the whole HD and reinstall a fresh OS without the crap.

Latest machine I bought was a Gateway with a P4-HT about 6 months ago. No piles of shit installed, didn't have to nuke the disk. No problems, yet. I'd buy a Gateway again; probably wouldn't buy an HP unless it was the bargain of the century.

If you are running at 1280 x 1024 (native res on 19" probably) then the nvidia 6800 video card is a bit under-specced for games

I have a comparable card with a much faster CPU and find that some games are still jerky occassionally

Also - don't get the analog monitor - get the digital kind

Analog is a bit 2002

Gateway are shite for customer care, and the puters aren't built all that well on the inside, lot of problems with over heating when they get dusty, which they do, bit like HP's, cause a fair few problems with hard drives failing, as well as some random things frying out...but then again, the systems I usually see are a couple years old, and there pretty shite, makes Micron look good, but on the plus, far better than eMachines, right shite makers they are.

Never ever use the customer care crap from an manufacturer -- always think it's easier to sort it yourself. Basically, if the machine is still going after a week constantly on, it usually lasts for 2 or 3 years. In fact, first time I ever bought a branded desktop computer was when I cam to the States. And that's only because it's cheaper than the bits if you buy the special. Don't think I've ever had a machine that hasn't had a few new parts in it over its lifetime, though. And I used to set up networks with ICL machines (Dos 3, Novell Netware, dBase, Lotus and Wordstar) that were engineered to the level of sewing machines.

We have a new Dell.........no problems with it in the last few months.......we had a HP before that for 5 years.....thats still going fine ...but it was cheaper to buy new than upgrade........

I have to agree with fatboy.if a PC is going to have problems........you get them in the first few days.........my HP need $29 worth of repairs in 5 years.....

I'd avoid HP like the plague - in my opinion.
