Paul Jameson made a nice job of putting a 27 ltr Merlin engine in a car ...

Nice stats...from an American aviation site were they
From an R.A.F comparison tests at the time they were both in service and given that the P-51 was the brainchild of the RAF hardly unlikely to be biased towards the Spit.

http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/avi...stang-881.html
"Maximum Climb The Spitfire XIV is very much better.
Turning Circle The Spitfire XIV is better.
Rate of Roll The advantage tends to be with the Spitfire XIV."
So given that the Spitfire actually DID climb much better, had a better turning circle and rate of roll it was therefore better at what it was designed to be..."An interceptor fighter" .... a purpose built "dogfighter" whereas the Mustang was an long range "Escort fighter"
and just for the record we are obviously talking a WW2 theatre so "range (so you are able to penetrate deeper into enemy territory thus increasing the amount of damage you can do to the enemies infrastructure)" is cobblers because it wouldn't have been used for this purpose...that would be the task of the bombers.

BTW, here's a cool clip of them being filmed at 'The Gathering of Legends and Mustangs Air Show' that I went to this September. It is the last time that the majority of the working 'stangs gathered for this event. This clip is of three of them flying in formation being filmed from the cabin of a C-130. It's pretty noisy so turn down your speakers.

Oh well. Let's agree that we are at an impasse and get one with the important things of the day such as super cruise, thrust vectoring, stealth, hidden ordnance, and first shot-first kill capabilities. That will be for another day I suppose.

But it was designed at an Interceptor and therefore didnt need to have range. All it needed to do was get up in the air at Biggin Hill and shoot down the Germans over the channel and home counties. All of its Battle of Britain duties were tied to within 200 miles of its squadrons home Aerodrome.

Joint Strike Fighter built by Lockheed Martin in partnership with the UK. The largest aircraft contract ever awarded I believe. It was a toss-up between Boeing and LM. Lockheed's design was much better than the Boeing's by a landslide. I had the opportunity to see the A version of the F-35 while I was in DC at the Udvar-Hazy Museum. Really cool!

I do. I love them all. You need to go to an air show where you are and just feel the jet blast hit you. The feeling is indescribable. You've got me all excited now. I just wish I had enough cash to go to RAF Fairford this summer in July when they host RIAT. THE largest military air show on the planet. If not next year, the year after that.
This is what I love. I'm just waiting for the 2008 schedule for this year. Woohoo!
