A cup of ... what???

Just paid another visit to the friendly guys at our local CIS to enquire about my son's AOS and hand in his AP application.

Went into the coffeeshop next door to get my parking validated. This is what I said:

"Can I have a croissant, a small coffee and a cup of water, please"

This is what I got:

- a croissant
- a cup for the coffee
- a plastic cup of...

FRUIT SALAD!!!

It could have been worse (I don't know how, but I'm sure it could have been!) :p

Speaking of that, is Davy back from the UK yet?

Are you kidding? I am - despite occasional evidence to the contrary (especially in that pub known as The Lounge...) - a mild-mannered, well behaved English Lady.

So I simply said "I'm sorry, I asked for a cup of WATER!" The girl did look somewhat puzzled for quite a few seconds. My son intervened at that point - he works at a pizza restaurant, so can do a passable imitation of Woadder...

I don't know, I don't care and I hope he has a super extended vacation in whatever corner of paradise he comes from. The BBC were complaining the other day that no one is promoting their news taglines in the US so they'll be glad when he tries to reenter the US

Davy and I are like peas and carrots :D

Toemaytoes is easy! But I simply cannot say woadder - not without sounding completely ridiculous.

Why should I anyway? Is 'water' really that difficult to understand?

Apparently it is when so many Americans cannot comprehend the English pronunciation.

If you were in France would you expect a French person to understand "Water" when it is L'eau to them? Its a whole different country and a subtly but sometimes distinctly different language too :)

Maybe if you'd said "a glass of water" you would have been ok, sometimes it's the small things that make a difference - it might be that the only things they serve in cups are hot drinks and fruit. :D

Just drop the 'T', that usually works :) Anyway, I believe that it's an ignorance thing, if you don't sound American then you must be speaking gibberish, totally bizarre in my opinion. I have a friend that refuses to go through a drive thru because she has never received the right order, they swear that they don't understand her. :(

Look, I have tried, but I just cannot say it without feeling a total :o

And I would never dream of going through a drive through.

And not just because they most likely would not understand me...

Half the time they're not really listening. I think they must have thought you said "A cup of whatever".

I ordered a "Bear Claw" and got a bagel, realised I hadn't got the rrr right.

I have problems understanding the English of the Hispanic couple who clean my apartment. So I can easily understand that they don't always understand what I am saying. Lots of service jobs are filled by immigrants in the US. They are already trying to translate what they think they are hearing into American English give them another version of English, complete with different pronunciations and it is probably true that they dont always know what you're saying. This might not be the case in point for Elvira ,but I've certainly experienced it in DC.

But you do know he is due for a sp4nking on his return? There was a silent auction for the implements. That's finished now, but their are tickets left for the amphitheatre. :)

I dunno, I tried to order at Sonic the other day, kept asking for a burger, to which I got 'a what?', 'a burger', 'a what?', 'a burger', 'a what?', 'a burger'!

I felt like the Indian lady from Fat Fighters in 'Little Britain'! :D

I wonder what All American really means?..is it white Anglo Saxon, Eastern European anglicised third generation immigrant. I've never heard it used to apply to anyone who wasn't white or a close shade of.
