Default crossing from Canada to US-what papers do I need to bring?

Hello,

I am a Permanent Resident of Canada (born in Scotland, emigrated in 1967 at age 4, listed on my mother's passport). I've never needed a passport, so have never got one. In the past, whenever I travelled to the US I simply brought along a registered photocopy of my Scottish birth certificate and my immigration papers. It's at least 20 years since I crossed the border but now I've been invited to a wedding in Buffalo at the end of November.

Do I need any special paper work in order to cross the border? (I'll be travelling by car, crossing near Buffalo)

Should I be applying to Scotland for a British Passport, and if so, how long will that take? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Karen
