I can't say about being a cop, but in Maine, all you need for a gun is a ssn

Same as waiting periods

Nonimmigrants are forbidden from possessing firearms.

Isn't that just about bringing it into the country though?

I have a work visa which makes me a US resident and I'm allowed to buy a firearm here in Illinois, as long as I declare my SSN and admission number on the FOID application. I found this out when I wanted to take up rifle/pistol shooting for sport.

But my lease prevents storing of firearms or ammunition on the premises.

How would you be overcoming the federal prohibition on non-immigrants possessing firearms? Hunting license, waiver?

Not sure. The application for the FOID asks "Are you a US citizen or a naturalized citizen?", if you answer no then you must provide an admission number (from the I-94) and your country of birth.

The only other immigrant question relates to illegal aliens.

I would expect this application to state clearly that non-immigrants are not allowed to own a firearm if that is the case. This application form was last updated in May 2003.

Are you sure it's not non-residents rather than non-immigrants?
