I never been called an exception before

Well if she loves you too and wants to be with you, you've got one realistic path. Your choice!

look for a third country?

If she doesn't like the UK, and you end up not liking the US, it'll be a breaker...and the easiest way over really is marriage, other wise it's an unlikely thing...so get used to VOIP calls I guess.

If you're actually interested, you should research it further, since citizenship is not the basis for the selection.

I read about it on the US emmigration website. It said only those in the UK residing in Northern Ireland could apply... does anybody know why?

It has nothing to do with where you reside.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Card_Lottery

Those born in any territory that has sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years are not eligible to receive a diversity visa.

For example, I used to live in New Zealand so moving won't be difficult, but because it will be for her then it it seems a bit unfair! Although, she could easily get in and nail a job in the UK, it always is for foreigners.

As one half of a US/UK relationship that has/does have difficulties with the issue I would not recommend throwing caution to the wind given those two statements. You need to be absolutely sure you can live with the US for life, and you need to be sure if you do make compromises it doesn't turn to resentment.

You could love it, but you might not! To be fair, from living in Cardiff I think Chicago's a good starting point but lovers beware.

Is affording some study to get a student visa a viable option?

Well, since I am a lecturer now, i saw that some research councils offer buy outs or fellowships to visit institutes across the world. This may be an option to investigate as the maximum I believe I can stay is 6 months. That would give me enough time to see how we get on living together and living in the US... thanks for everyone's advice and comments by the way :)
