Congrats!

It has been over a year of being a US citizen for me now. I still have not used my nice new US passport. But it is nice to have, and to realize no more interviews, or forms, or money to the USCIS. I haven't even renewed my old British or Irish passports, why bother? Although having 3 passports makes me feel like Jason Bourne.

Also, I have not been asked for jury service. Fingers crossed they forgot to update my status on whatever system they use to find prospective jurors.

Having a British or Irish passport is still useful is some circumstances. For example, British and Irish passport holders don't require a tourist visa to visit Brazil while US passport holders do require a visa. British passport holders can visit New Zealand for up to 6 months while US and Irish passport holders can visit for up to 3 months. Of course, these benefits won't be useful to everyone but it's worth knowing that these (and others) exist.

Did you remember to inform the SSA that you are a USC? They need to update their records.

Yeah, I popped into the office the next week to change my status. Is the SSN how they find you for Jury service? I honestly have no idea, i assumed it was the DMV or voter register but i guess some people do not have licenses. The DMV is the only place i have not visited to change my status. IIRC correctly i had to show a passport when i first got my license.

Interesting, I never did this when I became a citizen in 2006. When I applied for my social security earlier this year, they asked me to come in to the local SS office because they wanted to photocopy my naturalization certificate.

I never did either, nor was there anything telling me to.

My wife and I also didn't update the SSA when we became citizens. The first time we discovered it was a problem was when our oldest daughter applied for a federal student loan for college. She indicated that she was a USC on the application but got a rejection letter from the US Dept of Education stating that they could not verify her citizenship status with the SSA. So we all went into the local SSA office with our US passports and had them update our records to indicate that we were USCs. We received new SSN cards in the mail about a week later. Same numbers but with a date stamp on the front of the cards. Also my wife's "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION" message was removed from the front of her card.

It would just be too easy to have the USCIS send the names and SSNs of new citizens over to the Social Security administration, wouldn't it?

That's just crazy talk.

This (BE) is the only place I have ever even heard it mentioned. My SS card looks exactly like the one Mrs. N. has, so I'm not sure what difference it makes. No doubt somewhere down the line something will crop up to make me take care of it. I've been using it since 1996 though, so it's a bit late really.

It was one of the three things they mentioned we should do during my naturalization ceremony: notify SS, register to vote, get a passport. It was also the only one I did right away . I only got my passport last year, I'd been a citizen 4 years by then ...

Now read up on the IRS PFIC rules. OMG.

Is it just me or are they designed basically to make it near impossible to invest in anything outside of the US?
