As a non-Christian, I find the holiday troublesome because almost everything is closed. It is celebrated by most people with home-based events with family and friends.

Since you are in the Bay Area, I can share a past experience -- we drove up to Asilomar in Pacific Grove one Christmas day. They had a Christmas dinner -- and since the dining room has the tables of ten, it is quite friendly. Since there are usually no conferences scheduled at Christmas, it should be readily available.

It was relaxing having the old style room with no telephone, internet or TV! The location is spectacular. [The LA Times recently had an op-ed piece suggesting retirement of "amazing" as a superlative, but I digress.] The grounds are adjacent to Monterey -- so one can see the Presidio and the Aquarium.
