If you are in the San Francisco area, what about a Christmas Cruise to a great climate, should be reasonable, and food and lodging all included. Check out on Google Cruises from San Francisco or go on the AAA site.

They don't do the 12 days of Christmas generally over here, it's usually all taken down by end of boxing day or within a few days, shops and the outside will be void.

I was there for one Christmas and drove down the PCH to hang out on a beach or two for something different to do. It was a lovely sunny day, almost 70F if I recall correctly.

Miami, lol ran away from that area 5 years ago, you had better take a bullet proof vest, lock your car doors while travelling, and you better travel in groups, do not stop for gas at night. In fact don't be out after midnight.

Will be good not to be in the UK when it starts in August for once :)

Any info of things to do in SF around Christmas would be gratefully appreciated.

At least all the Xmas crap doesn't start full-on til after Thanksgiving in the USA.

If anyone is traveling - then on a practical note - be a bit careful where you may have any change of planes whilst flying. A lot of the USA has bad weather in late December.

That 3 hour layover can soon get a bit iffy when your 1st plane lands 2 hours late due to a snow storm.

Which is why if at all possible I would avoid northern routes for clients.

Holiday cruises book up fairly quickly so watch out! My ex SIL started pricing one through me back in February for Thanksgiving week, kept tracking it and I booked it for her back in August when it was "on offer." It's a 9 day one out of Fort Lauderdale. She lives in KC and got a good deal on Southwest to fly to Florida.

Lots of people would rather do it over the holidays then do the whole tree , cooking dinner for a crowd etc.

Christmas trees tend to go up earlier than in the UK so by Boxing Day (which Americans don't do either of course) they're ready to be thrown out before they catch fire and incinerate people's houses.

Not around here...Christmas decs usually start after Thanksgiving and it's not unusual to see Christmas trees in houses and gardens lit every night well into March.

Stay in the city! It'll be our 4th Christmas in the Bay Area and it can be expensive to travel. That said Tahoe or Yosemite can be fabulous but if you can take a break just after the holiday that is easier/cheaper.
The trees/lights will go up the day after Thanksgiving for a lot of people but remember no one knows what Boxing Day is!! It's all over by the 26th and (as my kids will tell you) the M&M's will change colour again!!
Try a short trip to Monterey or up to Healdsburg/Wine Country if you don't want snow.

Or take a long trip to Death Valley, Joshua Tree or the Nevada desert. All are fun to visit at that time of year.
