Default Cellphone for Germany trip.

I have my iPhone here still under ATT contract so can't unlock it.

Should I use my iPhone over there?

Should I take my unlocked Nokia E71 and buy a local sim?

Or buy a pay as you go over there?

(Just don't want to end up with hundreds $$ in charges.)

If anyone has experience I'll appreciate it.

If you just need to have a phone, then take the Nokia and buy a PAYG SIM in Germany.

If it is important that you have your US phone number, then check with AT&T about getting an overseas roaming package that will lower the cost of using your iPhone abroad. You should be able to sign up for it temporarily.

In either case, make sure that you bring a Europlug converter so that you can plug in your charger. (A voltage converter isn't necessary.)

A couple of years back I had to take a trip to Costa Rica -- I went into AT&T owned store and explained that I was traveling foreign and they unlocked for me.

[BTW, on that trip it turns out that the only way to get a local SIM is to buy it from the national phone service at the Airport before clearing customs -- and they don't sell data. So, my device became a "dumb" POTS device.]

Call AT&T and put an international voice/texting plan on there.

Make sure your voicemail is still working AFTER they change your plan.

I recommend you turn OFF Data and Data Roaming on your iphone. The charges are ridiculous.

Tmobile has the best deal on international Data if you have a device you can use on their network.
