I don't think you can go wrong with either the Corolla or Civic. The new Civics probably have the edge in the looks department, but you might have a different opinion.

Just my 2c.

Hi:

Its been a long time since I've driven a Corolla.

I had a rental Civic Hybrid in Arizona last year for four days and another one day rental: it was comfortable and easy to drive. The one day in blazing July Arizona and the four day number was a trip from Phoenix to Flagstaff and Sedona [e.g. a 5000 foot altitude difference].

With one of my offspring -- test drove a Mazda 3 and Scion Tc -- both felt good.

BTW, I have owned both a Civic and a Corolla -- but the Civic was a 1976 and the Corolla was a 1982.

Neither car will do you wrong. You're just going to have to test them both for yourself, because they're close enough in most respects that personal preference is the deciding factor. And we are not you.

FWIW, the '03 Corolla I tested didn't suit me much in the comfort department. The '03 Civic I ended up buying 5 years ago now has 120,000 miles on it. I average about 37-38 mpg in the summer, and 32-33 in the winter. Money spent on it has been gas, a new windscreen (don't last long in NM), 2 sets of tyres (~$90/tyre - not cheap), 12 oil changes, 1 trans. fluid change @ 60k, one brake job ($320, blew a caliper seal at 55k - nothing serious but I had the whole system redone while I was at it), 1 full service at 110k ($690, all belts, water pump, spark plugs, timing, trans fluid, etc...).

So try both out and decide for yourself.

Hi:

Self-contradictory statement. However, it IS a recommendation in the sense that tires ARE cheap for a Civic. Also, considering the age of the car, it seems that the tires last a fairly long time -- three sets in 120K miles isn't bad.

BTW, as with any FWD car, rotate the tires front to rear after 12K miles or so. You will be glad you did.

Id say go with the Nissan that someone else mentioned... They are actually really good cars, but only if you can afford the Altima(start around $20k). Civics hold their value the best which is one reason they charge extra. The Toyotas are VERY cheap cars for what you get, so if you are after a bargain, thats your car.

I dont like the big digital speedos they put on the Hondas, when driving at night any car driving next to you can see your exact speed. Hello speeding ticket.

Call state auto for car insurance quote. Everyone will have their own opinions about this, but i found them to be very cheap and great coverage. I have my house insurance with them also and that saved me a bunch.

Avoid the cheapo-budget car insurance like SafeAuto.... they only cover your legal requirements, not any use if you need to claim.
