Car Servicing
I know there have been threads on this before - and i really can't see that oil changes need to be done every 3000 miles even if the petrol is piss weak and the weather is solar temperature but got the oil change today - at the franchised dealer - they washed the car - did it all in half an hour and it cost......19 bux!!!
I don't care what you say that would have been the thick end of 150 quid or more at home - and they wouldn't have washed it unless it was a prestige motor!!!

I only had one car in the UK... but I do remember that my first oil change cost me 180 quid, granted they changed a filter too....

Look in your owners manual or the maintenance booklet and don't service the vehicle any more than the manufacturers say. The main reason that oil gets dirty (80%+ or so) is combustion leakage, modern engines hardly have any of this at all, they aren't allowed to as per EPA regulations. So the oil mainly just lubricates without getting contaminated. The 3000 mile idea does not apply unless you drive a really old car.
Cars are a big hole that you just keep throwing money into.

But then the total cost has been the same.
Just one of those US things.

Its even cheaper to do it yourself, and you know its been done correctly as well with filter and oil changed.

I would prefer to put in synthetics but do not fancy having to change that every 5,000 and for some reason they charge a lot lot more than just the extra cost of the oil.
I would do my own but the filter is a real pain to get at and do not fancy getting a relocation kit fitted.

Temperature should not be an issue for most, usually only those with turbos who use the full rev range. Or track their car.

Benefit of synthetic is that you do use slightly less OPEC product.
Those of you who change your own be sure to take the used oil to a recycling dropoff point. The only good thing about changing so soon is that it is probably easier to recycle "newer" old rather than sludge.

Where I am the recycling centre's do not take oil, you have to take it to a garage and they can charge.
