Default Car insurance for teens

I did a search and found general car insurance threads. Has anyone been able to find cheap car insurance for a teen driver?

Also my insurance company wanted to know my daughters grade point average. Is that usual? Her GPA is good so that's fine, I just thought it an odd question.

Basically I was going to hand over my seven year old Ford Focus to my daughter as I'm getting a new car. However the $1200 I am paying per annum will jump to $2400 to add her

This is through USAA. Guess I should shop around?

Congrats!

Yes they ask for GPA. You are supposed to be less wild

As I remember ours went up by about that when my son went on it, but then adding my daughter later wasn't as much. So I think that amount is probably about right.

We were with Liberty Mutual for many years but then they suddenly put the premium up sharply for no reason and I went to Geico. I would recommend them. Their price was better and we had a claim for damage in a car park, they dealt with the repair fine. They give a good discount if you are in the public sector.

Cheap insurance for a kid, not likely. Most places, they get tacked onto your insurance automatically once they're old enough to get a permit.

As for GPA, yes, some companies give a discount for a good GPA score.

Nope. Finding out it isn't likely. Spoken to a couple of people, what I was quoted was about average. Also surprisingly I emailed a friend in the UK who said adding her 18 year old son more than doubled her insurance.
