Default Car Insurance

Hi everyone - I am currently going through the procedure for emigrating from the UK to USA (Florida), and, if all goes well, we should be there approx Apr/May time. I am aware that car insurance is considerably more costly in US than in UK, but I have also heard that most US insurance companies do not take into consideration the UK driving record of a new immigrant, ie they shall be assessed as someone who has just passed their driving test. If anyone can recommend a company in Florida that does recognise a UK driving record (accident free etc), I would certainly appreciate it.

Here you go Car Insurance A simple search pulled up just what you were looking for. Allstate and GEICO are two of NATIONAL insurance companies. You do not want an insurance company that only serves Florida.

Watch out for coverage levels - there are discount policies available which only conform to state minimums which are sometime grossly inadequate, for things such as liability, medical etc. If you're a student, or not in the country legally such polices might make sense, but not if you have a career, family, and savings.

Hello All

Following on from this thread which is about car insurance in the US and which companies recognise your UK no-claims, is there somewhere I can check for the same in Canada? I have my nephew and his wife coming over on a 2 year IEC but they will be buying a car.

I know when we came over 13 years ago we struggled to find a company who would recognise ours but then again I didn' have this wonderful forum to ask questions on!

Pulaski's advice is spot on.

Good insurance here is essential. I've unfortunately had to call on our insurance twice (once with Geico due to hail damage and once with American Family due to our other car getting rear-ended).

Driving standards here are significantly lower, and unfortunately there's a significantly higher chance you'll be calling on it over here. (Not sure where you'll be in FL, but obviously there's a 'natural disaster' element there too!)

And a much higher chance of being sued for a fake injury.

This is better answered in the Canadian forum. I will ask to have your post transferred.

I am sure if you post this question in the Canadian forum you will get answers specific to your situation there, because I don't know if there is much, if any, overlap in matters of car insurance between the US and Canada.
