Default Car Insurance??

This week i shall get my Alabama drivers licence, it is a "Y" licence, equivalent to a learners. Prior to taking my test i will be driving my wife's (the USC) car to get used to driving over here, will i need stand alone insurance or can i put my name on her policy as another driver? how does it work over here?
Also i will drive her parents car, so do i need a personal policy for the cars i will drive?

The first time I came to the states I bought my own car so got my own policy. The second time my husband and I only had one car so he just put me as a named driver on his policy. We have geico...he just did it online...it was fairly easy. I would think if you are driving other people's car to just ask them to put you on the policy. If you have a drivers license it shouldn't be a problem (other than their policies might cost more). It might be best to get a few online quotes to see how much it would cost. I think progressive have one of those compare tools where you put in all your info and it tells you the price quotes from all the companies.

My USC wife and I have joint insurance. The insurance was actually slightly cheaper before I passed my test than after. Not sure why.

I think it's a bit of both. They ask for information on the car (year, make, model etc) when you get a quote as well as how many years you have been driving.
