Default Can UK citizens get a US visa vfrom Australia?

HI there,
My partner and i are going travelling next year (We are uk citizens). We have contacted a company in the US who we want to work for, for 3 months later in the year but they have said that they do not do phone/CV interviews until April - by that point we will already be in Australia travelling. Will it be possible to get a US working visa from a US embassy in Australia? If we get positions with this company then we will need to apply for a US visa but can we do this in australia?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Many thanks
Emma

It's unusual to "pop over" to America and work for three months. You might find that there isn't a "working visa" that covers your particular needs on this one.

Usually you can only "use" the embassy where you reside -- so if you are just tourists in Australia, you probably cannot apply through there.

It doesn't hurt to email the US embassy in Australia and ask. Google "Australia US embassy".

There are possibly a few options. But little to go on without further information from the OP. The OP seems to believe there is some sort of "work permit" you can apply from the US consulate, then come here, interview for the job, and work. I think they may be surprised.

You should be able to apply for a nonimmigrant visa from Australia. Whether you are eligible for an employment based visa depends on what type of work you are planning on doing in the U.S.

The default position for US embassies overseas is that they prefer to process visas only for residents of the countries they are located in, and in some situations, for nationals only. However, many of the larger embassies will process visas for what are called Third Country Nationals (TCN's), ie people from elsewhere. It depends on a) the type of visa and b) whether you are renewing the visa or getting it for the first time. Check the US embassy website for Australia under non-immigrant visas, usually there will be mention of whether or not they take TCN's and under what conditions. Bear in mind that even if they accept you for interview they may tell you to return to your home country (in your case, the UK) and apply there if they have doubts about your application.

I am assuming that you have researched the type of work you will be doing in the US, understand what visa is required to do it, and are certain that you can qualify for said visa upon receiving an offer of employment. If not, you have a much bigger problem to solve than choice of US embassy.

The Visa we need is a J1 visa to work with an environmental camp in SOuth Carolina - they sponsor people to go out to work for the fall. We are just finding it hard to fine out whetehr we can get this visa when in Australia.
I will look on the US embassy in Auz website and see whether they accept applications from third country nationals.

Why don't you just contact the US Consulate in the state you'll be in?
Embassy/Consulate contact info here: http://usembassy.state.gov/
Explain how long you will be there and why and ask politely if they will accept your application while you're on the project in Oz.
