Actually it looked like you were right with 12v. Most of the sets I saw online were running 12v, except these German Marklin sets that are 16v I think.

Marklin make (made?) AC and DC. A lot now are DCC which is usually about 18v.

HEY HEY haveing a model train layout IS cool, what's really cool is haveing four loco's pulling fifty or sixty loaded coal cars.
