Does Vonage work in the UK? If so, get one with a local number to them in the UK, but setup the call forwarding to your US number. The long distance charges, if any, will be charged to the vonage account. They advertise free unlimited US to UK calling with their unlimited plan.

I've been using a website called Rebtel, you punch in the US number you want to call and it generates a number for you. When you sign up, you get free credit and if you get friends to sign up you get extra credit and it's lasted me months without topping it up!
Costs me practically nothing as I can use my free mobile minutes too - number comes up the other end as a local number to wherever they are in the US and they can call you back on it! Genius!
