Calling home

Hiyah,

Can anyone recommend any decent calling cards? I've been using 7-11 so far and getting almost 4 or something hours for 20$ which is the best I've seen. Just moved to Charlotte NC and they dont have 7-11 here!.

Today I got ripped off totally, paid 20$ for what I was told was almost 3 hours in K-Mart and actually got 20 mins!!!

Thanks

Jo

I use PowerNetGlobal, and have used Telegroup in the past. You need to be careful of PowerNetGlobal though as they overcharged me a bit in the first three months, and didn't set up my account properly in the first place.....

Forget calling cards, get a bigzoo account. It is great and you can call the UK from Charlotte for 3.9¢ a minute (there is no 1-800 number here :( ) plus a small monthly servicing fee (75¢, I think). At that rate $20 will get you almost eight hours to the UK spread over two months. :)

When I first arrived in the US (last summer), I used calling cards for a short time but I found them to be inconvenient to use and costly.

Then, I discovered onesuite.com from an article from Kiplingers (a financial magazine). Since then, that's all I use for overseas calls and long distance (in the US).

Last time I checked, it's 3.9c p/min to the UK and only 2.9c p/min long distance in the US.

The website is www.onesuite.com. You sign up there and put credit onto your account with a credit card. There's no joining fee and no additional costs other than the calltime. It's kind of like "pay as you go" for mobile phones but for landlines.

I recommend onesuite.com most highly.

calling cards

While in the US, for on-the-go usage including payphones, try one of the calling cards they sell at Walmart. It isn't THE cheapest but it isn't bad either. Also check out onetel. We used onetel (which is now owned by Centrica in the UK) to call the US for 3p a minute, and I think they have a Los Angeles office.

To call the US, we use a UK-based service called Telediscount for 2p/min, and their access number for calls to the US is 08444 620620.

Re: Calling home

I used to use pincity.com

It was either 3 or 4 cents a minute to England. Sometimes the connection wasn't great, but better than paying a lot for a regular calling card :)

Yes definately you should give www.onesuite.com a try they're only 2.5c a minute to UK now and no other charges - I charged $10 about 6 weeks ago and still got some credit left!!!!

go to nobelcom.com. I dont know about international rates but I found nationwide (USA) long distance for 1.9 cents a minute.

I use 1010-987. It's 3c per minute + 39c connection fee to UK. No monthly charges and nothing to sign up for. Probably isn't the VERY cheapest but it's so convenient and the call quality is crystal clear. Charge just comes though on your local phone bill.

One thing to watch out for - often the rate you are quoted doesn't apply to cell phones overseas. With a lot of the plans cell phones in the UK can be as much as 49c per minute. I call a lot of cell phones, there is no extra charge with 1010-987

I use bigzoo.com and get the best rates around. Calling from US to UK land line is 2.4 cents a minute if you use the local access numbers (which are explained on the website and 22.4 cents to a UK mobile phone. Feel free to put in "skinbop" as your refferal! Thanks!

And how does that beat my 2.4 cent???
:p

RaymanInPA Aug 13th 2003 1:59 pm

Straight Talk = 5cents per a minute with no connection charge.
Usage rounded off to the nearest minute.
You got to use a 1-800 number + a pin-code to access it.

90% reliable. The cheapness makes up for the other 10%

BritGuyTN Aug 14th 2003 1:05 pm

acculinq

bigzoo does seem good BUT for my needs (business)

acculinq is better

calling mobiles is cheaper
no hassle of prepayment
no need to type in a PIN each time - if you are making a large volume of calls then this is a real hassle (i used to use US 2 Global calling cards)

BUT 2.4 cents is a great deal! :-)

'Cept that's twice the cost of bigzoo!

.... which also has 1-800 numbers for most major cities, no connection charge (and a 2.9¢ rate in other places), and in my experience is almost 100% reliable.

The only negetive is a 75¢ a month standing fee. :(

Will these suggestions work if you are calling from a US based mobile phone to the UK?

I can't guarantee this is the whole answer, but, what does your cell phone service charge to call an 1-800 number? You will have to pay at least that to call from your US cell phone to your bigzoo account, plus the bigzoo rate to the UK.

MadJalapeno Aug 15th 2003 8:46 am

I am still in the UK at the moment, so as yet have no cell phone plan.

Still waiting for my H-1B visa to come through at the moment, but very eager.

Why not try looking at the web sites of the major cell phone services in the US to see if they tell you cost of calling a 1-800 number? The big ones are Alltel, Cingular, Verizon, Nextel, .... (any others?)

I use "Tracphone" a pay as you go service, but I have never called the UK through bigzoo from it.

MadJalapeno Aug 15th 2003 9:04 am

Thanks, I'll have a look around. I know that some of the calling card numbers that I have checked from the above messages do not work with cell phones.

JerseyBoy Aug 15th 2003 3:44 pm

The best calling card I've found is Masterbell card you get online at www.masterbell.com.

It costs 2.5c / minute, with no connection / maintenance / startup fees, or surcharges at all that I know of. I got stung with few bad cards when I first moved over (including one which said in bold letters "No connection fee", then charged a connection fee, and had it's customer service handled by a separate company that knew nothing about it and put me interminably on hold - but I'm not bitter ;) but I've had no problems at all with this one.

Hope it helps.

If you go to www.clarkhoward.com, you can find all kinds of long distance deals there! I call the UK for 2.9 cents a min. I use "BigZoo"

JoanneKarr Aug 16th 2003 12:56 pm

I've started using 10.10.987 for calls to the UK, something like 3c/min and 39 to connect, good as you can use it for long distance US calls too.
