Mine is a general query, regarding anyone who has moved and taken their cat.

Our cat is naughty, he keeps pooing outside of his litter tray. He pees inside of it, but nevertheless, its still a pain.

Strangely enough, he was fine the first 6 weeks or so, but now hes stopped being a good little boy.

We put it down to changing his cat litter, but he is back to his fave one now, and he is still pooing outside his tray.

This happened to any of you, how'd u resolve the problem?

OK I can't believe I'm going to have a public discussion about this, but here we go. I took care of a cat for a year once while its owner was in Poland, and it (the cat, not the owner) started doing the same thing. Only solution I found - put down two separate litter boxes right next to each other. The cat had got into the habit of moving after the liquid and before the solid, so to speak, and it just moved on into the second box. Also keep the boxes scrupulously clean. There, that's the last time I discuss the bowel movements of any species on the internet.!

Ohh I know the answer to this one and as my wife is a vet I had her answer it. We have 2 cats and 4 litter boxes as my wife infrms me that each cat likes to shit and piss in a seperate box and as was already explained you have to keep them really clean. My wife scoops the boxes twice daily because apparently if the box is not up to their clean standards they will have a protest shit outside the box. One of our cats had a protest shit on top of our bed once!
So in short get another box and clean it often and if that don't work..............?

Teach it to crap outside!

Put a wall round the litter tray with just a small hole for the cat to get in and then it's ass won't hang over the side....

Better make it a small hole though and higher up than it's ass.....



Here in california they have specially made things that cover the tray on all sides.... Like a little igloo....

We have an electric litter tray.... 1 minute after the cat has left the box it automatically scrapes out the contents and smooths the litter again for the next visit. Very handy.....

best thing we ever did was buy an igloo type box... available at mmost of the large pet stores in the US and the UK, our cat used to make a large mess of litter and contents every time.... then we bought this fabulous thing.... when it comes to emptying it... the bottom has 3 layers... the top one acting as a seive into the bottom whilst the middle one needs cleaning... so all the unsoiled litter drops through and can be used again.

the electric ones are a little dangerous tho... they work on motion detectors.. .so if your cat is prone to lethargy... then its likely to end up scared out of its wits the first time it gets caught.

I would first take him to the vet and make sure he isn't ill. Male cats are prone to urinary tract infections...He could also be constipated. My cat has a problem with that. Sometimes he can't go in the tray and it just come out elsewhere...There are good laxatives for cats.

Is there enough litter in his tray? I try to keep about 3 inches of litter in the tray for my cats. Was there a disruption in the house when he began pooing outside the tray? Is the tray in an area where there is alot of activity? Perhaps moving it to a quiet place...


Just some ideas...Hope it all works out!

I agree with the cats need a clean litter box or they will soil outside of the box. However, we have four cats and only two boxes. And this has been the case for the last 5-1/2 years.

Our oldest cat who is now 14 is starting to defecate outside of the box. She doing that by emptying her bowels in another cat's sleeping basket. She eventually soiled all of them, including her own. Those occurrences we chalked up to plain old naughtiness.

However, she will, on occasion, crap on the living room and I have decided it is because of the box not being up to her standards, although it only started three months ago.

The youngest cat loves to piss on the bathroom rug. The rubber backing being damp from stepping out of the shower is like a personal invitation to her.
