California Driving Test
For anyone living in or planning to travel to California, there are a few rules of the road which you will need to gen up on before you get behind the wheel and attempt to drive anywhere. In order to help you do so, I have devised a small driving test. So as to make it almost as easy as the real thing, there is only one answer to each question. Good luck!
1. What is the correct stopping distance at 25mph?
a) 1 car length
2. What is the correct stopping distance at 40mph?
a) 1 car length
3. What is the correct stopping distance at 65mph?
a) 1 car length
4. When the driver in the lane next to you is maintaining the appropriate stopping distance, as indicated above, is it safe to pull out in between him and the car in front of him?
a) Yes, so long as you immediately slam on your brakes in order to increase the distance between your car and the one in front to the mandatory stopping distance as indicated above.
5. In which of the following situations should you use your indicators? When changing lanes; when joining a freeway; when pulling over to the side of a road; when turning left or right at a junction; when parking; all of the above?
a) Indicators?
6. When you arrive at a stop sign, who has the right of way?
a) Me.
7. You are pulling out of a parking space in a car park. Another driver is about to pass your vehicle. Who has the right of way?
a) Me.
8. Is it illegal to read a map while travelling at 65mph on the freeway?
a) No. (This one is actually true)
9. You are approaching a traffic light and, when you are approximately 500 yards away from it, it changes to amber. What should you do?
a) Increase the speed of your vehicle in order to get through the light as it changes to red. If the car in front of you slows down and stops, execute a lane change and continue to increase your speed.
10. How much money would you save on petrol if you walked to the next strip mall instead of driving there?
a) This is a trick question. Ha ha ha. You almost got me there.
Congratulations - you are now ready to experience the joys of driving in California

Nice one - but you missed:
11. Your cell phone rings while you are driving to work. What do you do?
a. Put down your lipstick/donut so you don't spill your coffee when you answer the phone.

In the unlikely event of you encountering an earthquake whilst driving in California , you should pull over to the side of the road (wait until you are away from bridges, or telephone/power poles), draw to a stop and remain in your vehicle.

New Mexico version:
...
8. Is it illegal to eat a Frito Pie while travelling at 85mph on a dirt road in downtown Santa Fe?
a) No.
9. You are approaching a traffic light and, when you are approximately 500 yards away from it, it changes to amber. What should you do?
a) Keep going same as you were. You have a 30 second grace period starting from when the car in front of you crosses the light, whatever color it is at that time.
10. How much money would you save on petrol if you walked to the next strip mall instead of driving there?
a) Some, but then you wouldn't have anything to complain about.
