So what time do you get the Kid's off to bed? I've noticed it alot over here, little one's up 9 10 O'Clock under five's I mean, was talking to a Yank and she asked is that a European thing to get them in bed so early  I dont think 7.30 is early for my 4 year old, would be interested to hear what you lot do :)

On a school night mine (age 13 & 11) are normally upstairs by 8.30, 9 at the latest. I have noticed their friends don't really seem to have a bedtime routine.

Ours, similar ages to yours Britvic, are in bed at 7:30. The Americans we know seem to put their kids to bed much later - we know of one 7 year old who goes to bed at 1am

Yes my Parent's were firm on bed time also, but I am a great believer in Mum's & Dad's having a bit of an evening to them self's :)

Re: Bed time for Children.

From 2 weeks old, Tyler went to bed at 7pm, 7:30 at the latest. Now, at 2 years old, it's more like 8pm because of his nap. Sometimes I don't put him down for his nap until 1/2pm (it's usually 12pm), he normally naps for 4 hours, which means he won't get up until 5/6pm, so it's a bit early to put him down at 7pm. So we keep him up a bit later, plus I will sometimes keep him up until 9pm if it means he gets to see his daddy. Sometimes Dev will go for days without seeing Tyler, so I keep him up so they can hang out for a little while.

Very good :) Mine likes his 12 hour's. I know it gets less as they get older, but wait a minuet, seem to remember my Teens not wanting to go to bed, but can happily sleep for more than 12 hour's if you let them

The kid does what he likes. When he wants food or drink he barks instructions to his parents to fetch it. When he wants to go to bed (at about 1am) he goes to bed.

My two (5 & 4) go to bed between 7 and 8, which has been pretty consistent since they stopped having naps around their 3rd birthdays. I think most US pre-kindergarten kids still seem to have mid-day naps and so stay up later.

We have some Turkish friends whose kids are the same age as ours and they stay up until 12 - 1 am. I've no idea how they do it - I'm out on my feet before then let alone my kids.

I seriously think that my son's nap & early bedtime are the only reason why I'm still sane, well sane for the most part anyway!!! :D

Give it a year and you'll be doing everything you can to stop him having a nap because otherwise he'll be up until 11!

Our daughter is 11 and when school is in session bedtime is between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m. on school nights. Now that school is out and she goes to Summer camp I let her stay up until 10:00 to 10:30 p.m.

On Friday and Saturday night I let her stay up and watch TV until she feels like going to sleep, but she knows there will be hell to pay if she falls asleep with the TV on.

These enforced naps played the biggest part for me not to send my little chap to a day care, he would get very stressed being made to take a nap now days. He starts first step in September, pre kindergarden, but thankfully they call it quite time, he dose not have to nap.

Yeah - my daughter (just 4 at the time) used to hate them too - which made her hate going to daycare - we talked with her teacher and she was allowed to listen to books-on-tape on her walkman as long as she was quiet and lying still so from then on she loved it.

It's even easier for boys - they just find something up the noses or down their pants to play with :D

1 year old goes up at 6.30 or very soon thereafter.
3 and 5 year old go up together at 7.00, brush teeth, story, and asleep by 7.15, 7.30 latest.

we changed pre-k's earlier this year because htey were enforcing a lunchtime nap at the old one - our (then) 4year old was napping for 1.5 hours and then wasn't ready for bed till 9 or later in the evening. We switched 'schools' to one that had 20 minutes "quiet time" (as designated under texas law), during which they do puzzles or read, or nap if they want to. He never naps now, and that tinmetable as above goes like clockwork. 3yo doesn't nap either - cut it out a while ago. And the poor little 1yo snathces whatever she can, wherever she can, in between our various activities......

3 year old and 7 year old - about 7:30, maybe a bit later.

4 year old is a battle. Nuf said.

Our 2 year old (see left) tends to not nap during the day, but will sleep for a 12 hour stretch from about 8pm-8am. he will sometimes nap at weekends, but will still only stay up until about 10pm. There have been times when he just won't sleep, and on more than one occasion i've ended up pushing him around the local Meijer's at 1 o'clock in the morning, or put Teletubbies or Bagpuss on for him to watch.

Re: Bed time for Children.

My two year old is currently going to sleep between 8 and 9, tho it's stories and in bed by 8. We would prefer 7, which it was, but it stays light so late that I think that's the problem. This way he gets more time with dad as well and then sleeps in till past 7am instead of the 6am he was getting up, which we can frankly live without! He also naps 3-4 hours on an afternoon which I'm thinking of shortening to see if that helps, but I do love time for myself!

I don't know if it's a UK v. US thing with sleep specifically, though I have noticed that with kids US people revolve around them more whereas us Brits seem to like to get them off our hands for time for ourselves!

Re: Bed time for Children.

My kids are both grown up now,but I always had a set bedtime for them, and stuck to it,luckily they were both really great as babies!(the eldest slept through the night from 10 weeks old and the youngest from 2 weeks old!my friends called me every kind of b-tch on Earth!!!lol),as they got older the bedtime was 7pm up until they were 10 years old,I'd read their story to them and they were garunteed to be out cold by 7.30,until 6 the next morning....then when they turned 10 it was 8.30 bed,12 it went to 9pm and stayed at 9pm on school nights until they were 16,after that it was their choice, but if they were home they usually took themselves to bed anyway at about 9/10pm to catch up with their sleep from the late nights!
The other thing I was a stickler for, was homework, they didn't get to go out to play until it was done, and I'd checked it!,otherwise they'd fall asleep before it was finished,so they used to get on with it while I was cooking dinner.
I could never understand it over here when people would have their kids staying up until they went to bed,it's no wonder the kids are falling asleep in school!.....Sophia

There's a law for children needing to have quite time, hmm I didn't know that?! I wonder if they legislated when they can take a dump?

Strict (well somewhat!) routine in my house for my 2 yr old. Bath at 7.30pm, drink and cuddle/wind down time/ book reading from 8-8.30pm then bed. The only time that this varies is if we aren't home at that time but that seldom ever happens.
He naps most every afternoon for a few hours, so like Partystar said, to bed any earlier would be a bit too early.

There is, at least in the daycare / pre-K centres in Texas...or at least thats what we've been told at the ones we've been to, although I've never actually seen it written down anywhere more official than the school handbooks - maybe its just the teachers way of getting some quiet time!! :D Got to say, I love our 3 to bits, but the thought of spending every day locked in a classroom with them and 10 of their mates would drive me nuts - take my hat off to the teachers that manage it and still keep their sanity!!

Our eldest is going to Kindergarten in August, and someone was telling me the other day that they still make them have 1 hour nap/quiet-time once they get there - I haven't had chance to check that out yet, but certainly hope its not true!!
