Let me add just one thing to this: have you looked at how little a cop earns? In many small and medium sized towns, that amount hovers around $30,000 anually.
Get a degree in computer science, move to a decent city, and you're guaranteed to get a decent, well paying job.

that's twice my salary, so pretty good I think

We are a small town pop. 21,000. Our patrol officers with benefits get a package worth $96k a year.
