This is a sodding nightmare.

Can't take my driving test without proof of address. Need bank statement as proof of address. Can't open a bank account with any local banks without SSN. Yes I know it's not a legal requirement, but none of them are having it. SSN won't be available for the usual length of time (may be able to go to the SS office in 10-14 days to see if they will print me the number out).

Anyone any bright ideas? Apart from wait it out while getting more and more frustrated with this ludicrousness. I need to take my driving test while I have a rental car for a couple of weeks, hence the urgency.

Have you tried Fifth Third for banking? I managed to open a joint account there with my hubby 3 days before we were even married, Just with my passport, then we sent them our marriage certificate afterwards and they changed the name on the account etc.

They based it on my hubbys SSN, and just put a note on that mine was to follow - perhaps if you could open a joint one with your wife just to get the paperwork you need then I'm sure once your SSN comes through you can get one on your own?

Have you tried Wells Fargo, they opened my account without a SSN. Just gave it to them when I got it.

DH ordered the local paper delivered in his name before he actually lived here to open a bank account. They do not want anything except your address. Then when the bill comes (or maybe you can print one online) you have proof of your residence.

The bank was usbank.

Where are you living? Have you managed to get a rental ? If so, they should accept the lease agreement as proof of address....?

Any other proof of address you can use? Utility bill, any other piece of mail you've received at your home address? Did you get your green card in the mail yet?

You probably need to get a joint account, with your wife as primary account holder. Then ask the bank if they can add you as a joint owner, possibly using a 'dummy' SSN until you recieve your actual card in the mail. If anything, keep calling around until you find a bank that will work your situation.

I don't think you'll need to be in that much of a hurry to get your license BG. When we moved to OH, we waited for quite a while, probably around 45-60 days. They won't deny you a license if you take longer than 30 days. So why do you feel it's that urgent?

Most states have either a 30,60, or 90 day policy in regards to getting a state license when you first move to the state. By that time you will have your ssn and your bank account and utility bills to show as proof. Don't have to do it the minute you are off the plane.

You have a USC for a spouse. Have her open the account before you come to the US and rent the car under her name.
