I just found out that my reckless driving is going to cost me 400$ a year so where the rest is coiming from? "progressive' ofer me a deal for over 2600 for 6 months, 'geico' don't even want me but my friends agent who is 'state farm' agent and other companies offer me one for 2500 for a year. I don't think I would get cheaper. What do you think about that Manc?
And you would think that the cheaper the car is the less expensive insurance's gonna be... NO... it's even more expensive!!! nobody can explain why...

Depends what you want from a car I guess...Corolla's are rather dull, but pretty reliable and not bad fuel consumption, don't know about the lancer though.

If I remember there is a section on the Progressive website that ratescars A, B or C where A is the most expensive insurance (or the other way round!). All economy cars are rated A. More of them about, more likely to get stolen, etc etc. My brand new 2.3L Mazda is cheaper than my wifes 18 month old 1.7L Honda. Go figure.

Just thought I would add our experience ...

When my hubby enquired about cover for his new pickup, we were first quoted about $250 a month because of his international licence. Then the insurance agent found a company that was doing excellent rates for drivers with international licences .... Safeco Insurance. The rate went down to $150 p/m and will go down even more when hubby gets his AZ licence later this month.

We just in the process of getting a new car and were told that they charge more as I have got a UK license. If I could get a statement saying I haven't had an accident for 6 years then the rate lowers. Anyone know how I can get anything like that?

Yeah, write to your previous insurance company for a no claims letter. Not the broker, but the actual insurance company.

Insurance companies (UK) are quite used to being asked to provide evidence of 'no claims' and do so in the form of a letter. You will need to provide your past insurer(s) with the registrations of all the cars you have driven in the past 5 years or more if can.

Also, when you have your letter, try Safeco Insurance, they gave us a very good quote on our new pickup with UK driving licence(s).

I have been searching old threads for posts about car insurance, to find any references to websites that allow me to type in details once and get several quotes back. Someone earlier on this thread mentioned esurance.com I am about to try that site - can anyone suggest any other.
Also Manc - as an insuance person - does shopping around for car insurance quotes affect my credit score? I am trying to increase my FICO score to get a good mortgage rate in 3 or 4 months time, and don't want too many searches to impair my score.

Any help will be gratefully received!!

Insweb

In theory, your credit report should mark that the permissible enquiry for the report was for insurance, and this should not be a "hard hit" on your FICO.

If, like the OP, you are non-standard (i.e. new immigrant with no driving record and no or new FICO, or black marks) you might actually find a better quote using a local broker who specializes in small, local insurance companies until you have a history.

They're going to look at historical data specific to the car such as:
...the chance that someone in your car would be hospitalized after a crash. (Cheaper cars often have worse crash ratings and safety features.)
...the chance that the car will be totalled in an accident (the reason why a CRV is cheaper to insure than a RAV4).
...(especially in your case) the ability of that car to write off someone else's car or to hurt another driver in an accident.
...the chance that a driver of your car will have an accident (e.g., drivers of sports cars and 2-door cars are more likely to get into an accident).

If you think about it, you'll notice that a lot of these concepts counter each other. A good agent will have a feel for which cars are cheaper to insure in your particular situation. Find one with time on their hands.

also most imported cars are more likely to be stolen for parts, as domestic cars don't need to have parts flown in from Japan or wherever. so a Subaru Impreza say, will be more expensive than a Chevy Monte Carlo for instance.
