The largest DPS is in Pflugerville.
Address: 216 Wells Branch Pkwy, Pflugerville, TX 78660
Phone512) 486-2800

You'll need to pass both a written and driving test. You can get the study guide online.

Just FYI, you'll need to have a car with insurance that you can take the driving test in. Not all rental companies will let you do that, so double check if that's an issue.

You will also have to provide your social security card....

Is that desirable in Texas? In California, normally I recommend that people go to a quiet suburban DMV.

Pflugerville is a quiet suburb, and it's the largest facility, which means shortest wait times and greatest ease in getting a same day appointment for driving tests.

Good advice, though.

So are you already in Austin? Seems like you first posted in September about a possible transfer.

Are you in Austin yet? If you are in the UK, it might be that your IP address doesn't allow you to access it. Once you arrive in Austin, you have 30 days to get a TX license although truth to be told, I drove on my UK license for about year before getting a TX one as we were on a temporary assignment at first. Most of the other expats who came over did the same.

Buying a car, expect to put down a very large deposit as you will not have any credit history. We were lucky in that our employer leased a car for a year before we had to purchase a car. You will need to get a pre-approved a loan before looking for a car plus insurance before you can drive it off the lot. Pre-owned cars are expensive over here until they reach the 100,000 mark and even then they are not that cheap.

It is highly questionable whether that was legal, given that residence for immigration purposes is completely different from residence for determining if you need a state DL.

just tested and it didn't load when I had expat shield working (this gives me a UK IP address).

So, you need to use it when you are in Texas or if you can get a US IP address using something equivalent to expat shield.
