Apologies for going off topic, but Tarkak: I LOVE your profile picture! Where's it from?

yep really feeling the pinch here..food shopping has gone up...some things more than most...example..I usually buy peanut oil for my deep fat fryer, which was 11.99 for a gallon...I went to the shop the other day and the same brand and sized oil is now $22.99.....so I won't be buying that stuff anymore..

my weekly shopping bill (roughly same things every week) has gone from $100 to $150..

In all honesty...none of this would be a problem if they increased the wages to match the cost of living...not a cat in hell's chance of that happening though...

I'd never owned a credit card until I moved here cause I like spending my own money. Now I use one just to build credit, I tend to not use it much and pay back straight away as soon as I get home (I do it online) so I've been wondering what my credit score looked like... I received it this morning and it's in the upper 700=excellent apparently... I was very chuffed!

Around here food and petrol are definitely more expensive, house prices haven't raised further but they haven't gone down either and the job market is as it always was... I realise that this doesn't reflect what's happening in other parts of the country though...

Before I came here I saw a program about a couple who have converted their car to run on Vegetable Oil. They collect it from restaurants and fast food places.

It would normally cost the restaurant owners to get rid of the oil, so both parties win, they take the oil, filter it, and whack it in the car. Flick of a switch and its running on veg

Speaking of Veg. By fresh, Un packed food, it's cheaper than buying it pre packed and you get to pick the best of it. cook less, raw foods are better for you and save money.

Eat less meat *Shields self from meat eaters throwing stuff * I'm not a vegetarian, I eat the odd meat product, but I don't need meat, I've 100's of ways to get the same protein I need in veg products and its much cheaper!! Easier to keep and easier to grow in the back garden!!

P.S Not a hippy

OH is self employed, the amount of people asking for estimates and then saying they don't have the money has increased. Pisses you off after you invest time and gas into giving them the estimate.
Basically people are not doing home repairs unless they really have to and those required for real estate transactions are down.
On top of that the work van seems to be intent on suicide.
I'm feeling pinched, punched and shat upon.

I sound so mean, sorry.

No kiddo, you don't sound mean I know the feeling believe me-a variation in my line of work as well. The travel industry is feeling the pinch big time, it is considered discretionary spending. Doesn't stop people from dreaming though, and doesn't stop 'em from doing it online after they pick my brain....

My OH was informed back in June that he would be out of a job the end of July, we were fortunate he was able to find another job with no break. I'm not so sure I'd be as lucky.

It's scary when you get to be my age and instead of thinking we will be able to get by without any problems come time for retirement, instead you're wishing you had another 20 or 30 years to prepare. :(

We had our house on the market for a year, but only got offers for less than we paid for it 4 years before. so we took it off again. Just sitting it out now.

Definate increase in groceries. Just for example, I used to get this bread that was 2 for $4, I went to the supermarket again and the same bread had on new stickers saying 2 for $7....WTF!!!! Like that was a bargain or something

And of course the petrol prices...*sigh* I hate that feeling I get every time I stand there filling up, praying for the thing to stop spinning :(

Food prices are awful. I buy cabbage among other things for my rabbit, it used to be 33 cents a pound now it is over 60 cents a pound. Bananas were always 33 cents a pound they are now 48. Sugar that used to be 1.89 is now 2.34. I'm looking forward to cooler weather so I can walk to the shops and save gas, I'm lucky enough to have two supermarkets, walmart and target within walking distance! This only fails me when I buy too much to easily carry home.

I've been OK so far (touches wood) but it's affecting my husband. He's a doing contract work which finishes in October, and he's having a really hard time finding other work. Hopefully something will happen for him soon.

We bought our house in 2003 before the prices went sky high here in FL. So while we've lost value compared to 2-3 years ago, we do still have some equity in our house. Also, we didn't buy a huge property, we stayed within our means, and we have a fixed rate mortgage.

I have several credit cards but only one with a balance and it isn't significant.

My 401k has taken a tumble but I'm in it for the long haul so I'm sure it will bounce back. I've been thinking of investing in some stocks.
