I would imagine it might be a regional thing (she grew up in Illinois just outside Chicago, but I'm not sure what significance there would be in that). She said it was drilled into them how bad we were. I must have won her over somehow which is a good thing.

Well spotted! A common mistake! My foreign-born and educated wife would scream: "How could you possibly follow a modal auxiliary with a preposition?� But when she does this, they just look at her blankly.

I'm still amazed. I'm not above saying these things don't happen (afterall look at the South) but amazed none the less.
